Department Overview

 This position will be part of a dynamic, energetic and collaborative team that supports the organization in the use of data and information to further OHSU’s mission to strive for excellence in education, research and scholarship, clinical practice and community service. Members of the Business Intelligence and Advanced Analytics (BIAA) team work to apply knowledge and best practices to assist in the development of integrated data warehouse and analytic systems to support analytic tools and efforts to analyze enterprise data for informed decision making throughout the organization. 

 

As a Sr. Data Warehouse Developer with expertise in Oracle, the primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and maintain data warehousing systems that effectively manage and process large volume of data. 

 

This person will work closely with database administrators, business intelligence architects, business intelligence analysts, business partners, and leadership to gather requirements, design data models, and develop ETL processes to ensure high-quality academic, administrative (HR, Payroll, Grants, Accounting, etc), clinical, and research data is available for reporting and analysis.  Experience with human resources data model and systems (eg – Oracle HR, Kronos, iCIMS, etc) is a plus.

 

Key responsibilities:

  1. Designing and developing ETL processes using IBM DataStage, Oracle PL/SQL, or Teradata Decision Experts (TDE) Administrator that can efficiently extract data from multiple sources, transform it into a consistent format, and load it into a data warehouse.
  2. Monitor and troubleshoot any issues that arise with the ETL processes. Ensure that ETL processes are running efficiently and accurately. They may use estimation and monitoring tools to detect and resolve any issues with the ETL process, while applying a strong understanding of the underlying data and systems to diagnose problems related to data integration, data quality and performance.
  3. Optimize data performance by designing and implementing appropriate indexing, partitioning, and clustering strategies in Oracle databases.
  4. Ensure that the ETL process is secure and that sensitive data is protected. This may involve implementing access controls and other security measures.
  5. Ensure ETL is maintained through version control and change management.
  6. Maintain documentation on the ETL process, including standards and procedures for the definition of reference architectures, synchronize on coordinated efforts/projects, and provide guidance around ETL consideration/issues. This documentation is critical for troubleshooting, maintenance, and compliance purposes.
  7. Collaborate with business analysts & stakeholders to understand the business requirements and ensure that the data warehouse meets their needs.

Function/Duties of Position

System Analysis: 
  • Thoroughly document and understand customer’s business processes and how each application supports these processes.
  • Work with customers and analysts to document system and interface requirements
  • Make design recommendations to meet requirements and schedule

System Design: 

  • Develop and review technical specifications for the development of new functionality for the data warehouse.
  • Design system interfaces and ETL processes to support required output files, graphs and reports

System Development: 

  • Develop data structures and associated processes within the data warehouse based upon technical specifications for new functionality
  • Generate data models, build data marts and code ETL processes
  • Unit test solutions prior to QA.

 

System Support

  • Diagnose data and/or system problems and develop plans to correct problems that may include modifications to user procedures, user data entry instructions, user training, and/or database correction proposals.
  • Complete corrections by modifying code and/or data as appropriate and provide unit testing of corrections prior to QA.

Contact/Communication: 

  • Act as central point of contact for assigned departments and use knowledge of department’s business processes to translate technical specifications/requirements into informative, userfriendly specifications, documentation, and project plans.

 

This position is currently 100% telework/remote and may include remote work long-term. Candidate must be able to work from home full-time initially.

Required Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and eight years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Associate’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and nine years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Ten years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree.
Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of paid work experience as an Application Engineer (or equivalent classification
  • Minimum 3 years working with relational databases
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, data modeling, and ETL processes
  • Experience with the following tools: IBM DataStage, or Teradata Decision Experts (TDE) Administrator
  • Experience with Oracle databases, SQL, PL/SQL, and Oracle RDBMS
  • Experience managing major systems implementations.
  • Knowledgeable of Azure Data Factory, DataBrick, Datalake and SSMS, SSAS, Power BI
  • Experience compiling flowcharts and ER diagrams
Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Applied knowledge of operating system software (eg – scripting in unix, command, powershell);
  • Administer the installation & updates of ETL tools on local machine)
  • Must have excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills: both written and verbal.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • ­Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of development life cycle and production environment procedures.
