Function/Duties of Position

The purpose of the position is to provide a skilled research and engineering resource to design, develop, deploy, support, and integrate resources and services that reside within the Advanced Computing Center (ACC) at OHSU. The appointee needs to have a broad understanding of technology in order to anticipate customer needs, investigate alternatives, and synthesize and deliver unique solutions to advanced computing issues. Specifically, the appointee provides complex architecture design, infrastructure planning, server installation and configuration, application development and integration, as well as maintenance and support for overall ACC performance. The Engineer should possess expert level knowledge in the areas of storage architecture and management, web environments, virtualization, network, parallel file systems and grid computing.  In addition, this position shares team responsibility for project management, technical leadership, support and planning for complex computing systems and team cross training.

Required Qualifications


     Master’s degree with major courses in relevant field;


     Bachelor's degree with major courses in field of research plus 4 years related experience;


     9 or more years of progressively responsible experience in computer system architecture, design and support, preferably in a research environment. At least five years of the experience must be in a large, complex environment with multiple platforms and protocols.



  • Prior experience with advanced computing services in a research environment.

  • Experience in computer system architecture, design and support, preferably in a research environment.

  • Experience working in a large, complex environment with multiple platforms and protocols.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with large-scale data architecture and management, scientific visualization, and advanced computing applications including parallelization and optimization of applications.

  • Experience with parallel / distributed systems: PVM, Open MPI, SunMPI, MPICH; parallel scheduling systems including SLURM, Sun Grid Engine, HTCondor, Globus Toolkit, Platform LSF.

  • Experience with Galaxy and CBioPortal , OMERO

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, OpenStack.


  • Knowledge of healthcare, research and academic environments and application.

  • Knowledge of HIPPA regulations and project management

  • Experience with distributed file systems, object storage systems.

  • System administration skills: LINUX, Macintosh, Solaris; DNS, DHCP, LDAP, NFS, TCP/IP, UDP, SNMP, SAN / Fiber Channel technology, Infiniband, ipfilter/iptables, High Availability / Cluster technology, Oracle, MySQL, Postgresql, unixODBC, XML, Apache, Nagios, Ganglia, ElasticSearch/Kibana, proxy and portal products.

  • Software development skills: Ansi C, C++, Java, J2SE, Perl, Python, shell programming (Bourne, Korn).

  • Automated management tools:  Puppet.
