Department Overview

The lab's major research focus is to elucidate the AAV vector-animal host interactions using contemporary high-throughput molecular biology technologies and develop novel AAV vectors for broader applications of this vector system to treating various human diseases.

Function/Duties of Position

A Research Assistant 2 (RA2) position is available for adeno-associated virus (AAV) and gene therapy research in the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics. The RA2 will participate in the AAV vector and gene therapy projects conducted by the laboratory. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Performs various molecular biology assays, including construction and preparation of plasmid DNA, production and purification of AAV vectors for animal studies, and extraction of DNA / RNA from animal tissues
  • Assists in the daily operation of the lab including hazardous waste disposal, sterilization of equipment, cleaning glassware, general servicing, ordering of equipment and lab supplies, and preparation of media and buffers
  • Collects, records, organizes and verifies the accuracy of data; conducts leterature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study; documents and interprets results of experiments and reports to Principal Investigator
  • Presents experimental results at lab meetings and participates in departmental and group seminars

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (4 yr) with major courses in field of research; OR Associate's (2 yr) and 3 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to work autonomously and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to organize a large number of samples and perform high-throughput sample processing correctly and effectively
  • Ability to be self-motivated and to plan ahead

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's of Science degree in the fields of biology , biotechnology or biomedical science
  • Experience as a full-time research assistant in a molecular biology lab
