Department Overview

Transplant/Urology/Plastics (4A) is an acute care unit specializing in solid organ transplant (kidney, pancreas, and liver), complex plastic reconstruction surgeries, urology, and nephrology diagnoses and related surgeries. The patient population ranges from 18 years of age to the elderly.

 

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is part of the multi-disciplinary team providing care to OHSU patients. The CNA provides direct or general nursing care to patients from admission through discharge under the direction of a licensed Registered Nurse and within the scope of practice defined by the Oregon State   Board of Nursing. CNA's assist the patients, patient’s families and friends, nursing staff, and other OHSU personnel to assure the delivery of comprehensive quality care in a safe, confidential and comfortable environment.   

Function/Duties of Position

  1. Assist with the admitting and discharge
  2. Obtain accurate vital signs and weight. Gather and secure patient valuables
  3. Complete all unit specific CNA documentation in the patient’s medical record related to: admissions, daily care, vital signs, weight, intake and output, discharge, etc.
  4. Ambulate patients, provide aides as directed for safety and notifies nurse of additional needs
  5. Respond to call lights, assure that call light are within reach at all times. Seek assistance of the nurse or other health care personnel as needed
  6. Assist with or lifts/transfers patients and perform other position requirements safely
  7. Perform all duties necessary to assure delivery of prescribed diet and to meet all dietary needs
  8. Empty commodes, bedpans, urinals, foley catheters, colostomies, urotomy, and other drainage receptacles/containers as directed. Collect and test specimens as directed (urine, stool, other)
  9. Assist the patient with or perform basic hygiene
  10. Assist with turning/positioning patients as indicated or directed.  Assure good body alignment, comfort, range of motion (ROM), and support
  11. Assume responsibility for professional/job related development, knowledge of advances in technology, use of new equipment and appropriate application of hospital systems. Disinfect or discard equipment/supplies appropriately
  12. Provide and obtain shift reports with appropriate personnel when necessary or as directed
  13. Incorporate quality improvement practices into performance     
  14. Incorporate the principles of OHSU’s Mission Statement into performance
  15. Understand the teaching and research missions of OHSU Hospitals and Clinics
  16. Support patient and family centered care across the continuum through service coordination   
  17. Perform staff member requirements as outlined in the Compliance Section of the Core Competencies    
  18. Adhere to the OHSU Code of Conduct 
  19. Perform requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics:
    • Carry out job responsibilities in an ethical, effective and professional manner.
    • Report potential compliance problems using the reporting processes as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
    • Model ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance, and personal integrity.
    • Participate in training programs.
  20. Understand and comply with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and departmental policies and procedures, applicable rules and regulations. 
  21. Screen for pain and comfort care needs and notify the appropriate health care team member, adhering to the OHSU policy for Pain Management

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic math skills
  • Basic medical terminology skills 
  • Oregon State CNA license or CNA 2 (Acute Care) certification at time of hire
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • CNA II
  • Previous hospital experience preferred
