Department Overview

The Department of Urology at OHSU is committed to providing the highest quality, state-of-the-art care for adult urology patients. Our physicians are recognized leaders in their fields, have advanced fellowship training in urological subspecialties, and are expert, high-volume surgeons. This position is located in the Adult Urology clinic in CHH on the South Waterfront.

Function/Duties of Position

The Licensed Practice Nurse (LPN) will assist the physician with patient care and follow-up providing direct and indirect patient care in a clinical setting of the Urology Clinic. Duties include, but not limited to, interviewing patients, obtaining vital signs, preparing patients and assisting physicians with patient exams and/or treatment. Other responsibilities include charting and preparing charts for clinic as necessary. Additionally, the LPN will perform triage with patient phone calls to identify emergent and non-emergent situations.


The LPN will help facilitate patient flow through the Urology Clinic and ensure an accurate and complete medical record for each patient. The LPN assists the medical provider by coordinating departmental resources regarding tests, orders, radiology and results.


Additional responsibilities may include:


  • Providing specific customer services which include screening for financial eligibility, confirming health insurance coverage and obligations, obtaining necessary authorizations for care, and scheduling appointments
  • Facilitating communication between providers and the patient (e.g. prescription refills, return to work and FMLA forms completion, patient education, patient longitudinal follow up and tracking, etc.)
  • Providing education regarding disease, medications, procedures or other aspects of patient care based on protocols and pre-pared educational materials

May need to occasionally travel to work at OHSU Adventist Urology clinic location based on staff needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Oregon Practical Nurse License at the time of appointment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Experience in a high volume surgical outpatient clinic, including experience with multi-line phones
  • Knowledge and experience assisting in clinic-cased procedures
  • Basic math skills
  • Working knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong patient oriented customer serivce, including working with diverse patient population
  • Demonstrated problem solving and negotiation skills in resolving patient concerns
  • Detail oriented with ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Demonstrable record of reliable attendance, punctuality, and proven successful perofrmance at past and present employers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with electronic medical records, including EPIC
  • Verifiable experience working in surgery clinic
  • Familiar with JCAHO and OHSA standards
