Function/Duties of Position

Key responsibilities: 

  • Provide support and direction for the Hematology & Medical Oncology clinical providers and act as a resource to the coding team
  • Work with the physicians and coding staff to ensure high quality documentation that supports accurate level of service in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid billing regulations and guidelines as they pertain to CPT/HCPCS, ICD-10-CM/PCS and clinical documentation requirements
  • Query for clarification, provide feedback, and educate providers to improve the documentation of all chronic conditions, treatments and care plans within the health record to accurately reflect the clinical acuity, condition of the patient and to promote patient care
  • Help onboard incoming providers by training, educating and mentoring them while developing learning materials based on an individual basis for improved accuracy and compliance
  • Commit to transforming and continuously improving onboarding and coding program to ensure best practices and program goals
  • Responsible for meeting performance standards set for accurate and timely submission of charges for professional services
  • Collaborate with all critical stakeholders including Enterprise Coding to guarantee alignment across the Health System.  
  • Track and document progress on all initiatives and keep appropriate divisional and clinical leadership informed of quality progress, gaps in meeting goals, and opportunities for program expansion and improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Healthcare, Business or related field plus 5 years of production coding experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Detailed knowledge of medical coding systems, procedures, and documentation requirements
  • Knowledge of auditing concepts and principles
  • Certification in CPC, CPC-H, RHIT, or RHIA

Other requirements: 

  • Experience with systems and process improvement.
  • Experience with electronic medical record system
  • Presentation and training experience.
  • Experience with project and team oversight 
  • Detailed knowledge of medical coding systems, procedures, and documentation requirements 
  • Knowledge of auditing concepts and principles
  • Highly effective communications; oral and written.
  • Must be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of electronic medical records and data mining capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of EPIC information system.
  • Leadership methods in performance improvement/quality management 
  • Demonstrated presentation skills 
  • Able to lead new initiatives across clinical teams and other departments
  • Demonstrated ability to “spread” clinical improvement/quality
  • Ability to create meaningful reporting metrics to track performance of the program

Preferred Qualifications

Education: 

  • Accredited Coding Program: AAPC Boot Camp, AHIMA Coding Boot Camp
  • Training in HCCs and Clinical Documentation Improvement through ACDIS or AHIMA
  • Associates degree in Healthcare, Business or related field plus 3 years of experience in a Clinical Documentation 

Experience: 

  • Experience in ambulatory healthcare and Inpatient healthcare
  • 5-7 years coding experience
  • Experience interfacing with Medicare and risk-based contracts
  • Experience with collaborative relationship building across different health systems
  • Experience with focused health care quality improvement initiatives in an ambulatory setting

  • Knowledge of age-specific needs and the elements of disease processes and related procedures for the targeted patient population
  • Clinical knowledge and understanding of pathology/physiology of disease processes
  • Strong understanding of reimbursement and coding methodologies and guidelines; MS-DRGs; Severity of Illness, Risk of Mortality, Medical Necessity, Core and Quality Measures and impact of Length of Stay
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology
  • Ability to work independently in time sensitive environment
  • Ability to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to assess, evaluate and teach key concepts related to documentation improvement
  • Time management and project Management skills
  • Proficiency in computer use and windows based application
