The purpose of this position is to provide ophthalmic patient care assistance to faculty in the Casey Eye satellite clinics in Hood River and The Dalles, providing ancillary screening and testing as necessary.

 

Note: this is a trainee position, trainee applicants will be considered and must meet the minimum qualifications of the position within 12 months of hire.

Function/Duties of Position

Perform ophthalmic testing as appropriate per patient, including distance and near vision, corneal curvature, color vision, lensometry, interpupillary distance, applanation, laser interferometry, refractometry, retinoscopy, fogging, cross cylinder refinement, measurement of accommodation, Worth 4 dot test, stereopsis tests, near point of convergence, ductions, versions and vergences.  Assist in performance in laser surgery. Perform testing and evaluations of patients.

 

Screen patients for ophthalmic exams, including chief complaint, history, allergies, medications, supplements.  Perform protocol refractions and ophthalmic evaluations for various clinical studies.

 

Assist doctors during examination as needed; prepare for and assist minor surgeries; apply eye dressings, protective shields and safety glasses; as directed by physician, dispense medication prescriptions as needed by physician.

 

erform indentation applanation and noncontact tonometry, obtain comprehensive ocular motility movements.

 

Set up ophthalmic exam rooms, perform minor repairs on and maintain ophthalmic instruments.

 

Participate in continuing education courses and activities, maintain JCAHPO certification.  Have knowledge of and be able to practice JCAHO clinical guidelines.  Demonstrate competence in all required skills during yearly skills evaluation.  On an as needed basis, be able to perform duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited training program such as Ophthalmic Technician Program, Ophthalmic Medical Personnel Training Program, Eye Care Assistant Program, Ophthalmic Assistant Program, Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant Program, Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Program, Ophthalmic Medical Technology;
    • OR AA in Ophthalmic Technology from an accredited school
    • OR Current certification as a certified ophthalmic technician (COA) or higher;
    • OR BA/BS or in Health Care, Science or Research related field AND 1 year of clinical/lab experience conducting preliminary screening/vision testing to include specialized tests and visual fields; 
    • OR 2 years of clinical/lab experience conducting preliminary screening/vision testing to include specialized tests and visual fields.
  • BLS certification through American Heart Association (AHA), provider level.
    • Initial certification is the responsibility of the employee. Renewal certification classes/cost provided by OHSU if job required.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to perform ophthalmic tests and exams as specified above.  Ability to perform Goldmann Visual fields.  Demonstrated ability to use clinical diagnostic equipment.  Must be detail oriented and possess excellent interpersonal and patient relations skills.  Ability to multi-task and delegate workload is essential.  Strong skills and background with clinic operations including scheduling systems, and inventory control.

Training position must meet these qualifications within 12 months of start date.

 

Preferred Qualifications

COA or COT certification preferred.
