Department Overview

OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable, and develop new therapies.

The Knight’s Center for Experimental Therapeutics (CET) has an opening for a Senior Research Associate (SRA) position.  Experienced researchers with a PhD in Biology (Cell, molecular or Cancer biology) and at least five years of research experience in related field are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should have a broad interest in cancer research, be willing to participate in a variety of projects, and be interested in establishing and maintaining collaborations.

Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:

  • We act BOLDLY—Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
  • We SUPPORT each other—Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
  • We work as a CONNECTED team — We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone

Function/Duties of Position

The translational research projects within CET leverage a multi-disciplinary approach in biology, chemistry, pharmacology, molecular modeling, and in vitro and patient-derived models to probe complex biological processes and to pursue therapeutic opportunities for novel protein targets. The Senior Research Associate will join the Center with the goal of understanding the molecular aspects of cancer, how tumor cells adapt to micro-environmental stimuli, and to develop and optimize targeted, personalized therapies for this disease. The SRA will be responsible for most of the planning, implementation, and data interpretation associated with their own research.  Additionally, the SRA is expected to interact with graduate students and be actively involved in their scientific supervision and in the general research directions of the lab (both technically and intellectually). A critical aspect of this position is to establish and maintain collaborations by taking full advantage of the terrific network of labs offered within OHSU, as well as wide network of external CET collaborators.

Duties Include:

  • Perform hands-on experiments (in vitro and in vivo) and analyze/interpret data on assigned projects
  • Act as a lead scientist in area of expertise on one or more projects. Critically evaluate relevant scientific advances and integrate this knowledge into research programs. Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting. Demonstrate the ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise. Participate in project planning and execution
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present work at scientific conferences. Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program. Effectively write and/or communicate research and regulatory materials. Attend and present at the group meetings and national conferences

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience – OR - Master's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience – OR - Bachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 9 years of relevant experience – OR - Equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Ability to be a team player and comfortable in a multidisciplinary, collaborative research environment
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills:  both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS. Ability to accurately type 60wpm
  • Working knowledge of Oracle
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of relevant post-doctoral work experience
  • A strong background in cancer biology and performing hands on experience in cell and molecular biology
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
