The Research Associate provides high-level professional support in analytic activites at the Center for Health Systems Effectiveness (CHSE). Major components of the work include:

 

• Collaboration with Principal Investigators and other CHSE staff to design, manage, implement and interpret statistical analyses focused on healthcare expenditures, utlization, and quality
• Creation and management of very large administrative health insurance claims datasets
• Data management and statistical analysis using R and Python
• Provision of expertise regarding healthcare quality measures
• Development of validation processes to ensure data quality
• Rigorous documentation of methods and other practices that ensure reproducibility of results
• Innovation and problem-solving at all stages of research
• Contribution to development of project deliverables via writing, interpretation of results, creation of compelling data visualizations, and editing
• A commitment to continuing education and self-improvement as well as participation in cross-education and knowledge sharing with other staff via trainings and presentations
• Performing other duties as requested by the Supervisor or Center Director

40 hours/week; core hours are 10am - 2pm PST; very occasional evenings or weekends may be required.

• Bachelor's Degree in relevant field and 3 years of relevant experience; OR 5 years of relevant experience; OR equivalent combination of training and experience
• Strong coding skills using R or Python
• Working knowledge of statistical theory and hypothesis testing, quantitative analysis methods and database management techniques
• Knowledge of healthcare measures of quality
• Proficiency in research activities including managing, analyzing, and summarizing data; study design, research methodologies
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions and maintaining thorough documentation of the decision-making process
• Exemplary communication skills and ability to effectively present research findings to diverse audiences within and outside OHSU
• Strong commitment to rigorous research methods, objectivity and accuracy of findings, and reproducibility of results

• Demonstrated experience with management and analysis of administrative data, especially claims data (such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance data)
• Experience managing and analyzing multi-terabyte datasets
• Working knowledge of SQL
• Familiarity with different providers of healthcare quality measure (e.g. NCQA, AHRQ, ResDAC, etc.)
• Experience working in Linux/Unix environment
• Ability to work under minimal supervision
• Knowledge of health disparities and the factors that cause them
• Experience working with diverse populations and in diverse environments
