Department Overview

The APP in Emergency General Surgery (EGS) position duties include coordinating and supporting the needs of EGS inpatient and outpatient care and clinical support operations for the Division of Trauma, Critical Care & Acute Care Surgery. The APP works in close partnership with physicians, advanced-practice providers, RNs, CMAs, residents and hospital personnel to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The APP works to assure a smooth transition of patient care and education between the inpatient and outpatient arenas in order to decrease length of stay, improve patient outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. Provides modeling for staff and residents regarding excellent internal and external customer service and teamwork. The APP works in conjunction with the surgeons, RN Care Coordinators, surgical residents, Division Manager, division staff and OHSU leadership to provide services to further the OHSU’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.


Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Activities:

General responsibilities will be to the clinical care of patients, both in hospital (Pre-operative care, ICU, and ward post-operative care) as well as in the outpatient clinics and outpatient care management primarily of the EGS patients but may include trauma and Trauma Surgical ICU patients as well. Opportunities in the operating room will be on a case-by-case basis.


Direct Inpatient Care (Primary Responsibility) – care, follow-up and documentation of assigned patients from admission through discharge, work actively with the EGS surgeons, as well as the hospital/unit/case manager, inpatient pharmacist and coordinator staff to implement discharge plans. Will assist with education of surgical house staff, nursing unit staff, and case managers on service protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care and enhancing quality of patient services. Promote and maintain the health of service and excellent care to patients through the use of ancillary services.


Rounds –The APP will also be included in both sign out and daily rounds with the Attending Staff, Residents/Interns, RNs, and case managers.


Direct Outpatient Care - follow-up of EGS patients. Will field telephone calls regarding all EGS patient issues, as needed, address clinical problems, and fill prescriptions. Will follow-up on ordering and checking labs and imaging studies on our patients. Will promote and maintain the health of service for our outpatients through the use of educational materials and counseling of patients and their families.

OR Support (Limited)–Assist in the operating room during for emergency general surgery cases as well as elective surgical cases as needed at The University Hospital. Usually during protected resident education hours and days off/vacations.




Teaching - Provide and/or participate in service orientation and teaching of medical students, interns, residents, APP students, nursing staff, and other support staff on the inpatient and/or outpatient service. Provide/participate in teaching conferences, rounds, clinical in-services and staff educational programs for the outpatient & inpatient service. Maintain repository of service line specific articles, presentations, and clinical care guidelines.


Protocol Development and Revisions - Will lead or assist in ongoing protocol development and implementation in conjunction with faculty physicians and other team members. This may include clinical plans of care and/or protocols for service patients with disease processes/ diagnoses/ procedures; participate with house staff and fellow hospital/unit/coordinator staff in evaluating results of protocols and continually working toward improving effectiveness of it.


Best Practices- Will participate in Morbidity and Mortality conference and EGS Best Practices with the goal to ensure protocol adherence and support the development of QI projects.


Scholarly Activities (research, abstracts, grant supported work, presentations, etc.):

Fosters advances in healthcare by participating in research activities in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma, including but not limited to identifying protocols to improve care delivery; contributing to development of new drugs to effectively treat disease, performing clinical trials using human subjects to determine the effectiveness and effects of pharmaceuticals. Demonstrate success or productivity in the field as evidenced by publication in journals and/or other forms of peer presentations.


Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner: Valid State of Oregon Registered Nurse license, current Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon, State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges, Recommend membership in professional nursing organization. Must have completed an acute care / critical care training program.

Physician Assistant: Valid State of Oregon Physician Assistant license, current Physician Assistant license for State of Oregon, State of Oregon Licensure under OHSU MD, Recommend membership in professional organization. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience as an APP in Emergency General Surgery
