Department Overview

The Department of Comparative Medicine provides for the health and welfare needs, care, and housing of research animals throughout the OHSU central and waterfront campuses. As well as supporting the research innovations of the OHSU investigators.

Function/Duties of Position

**New hires are eligible for up to a $1,500 hiring bonus**

 

The Equipment Processing Technician is expected to acquire an understanding of the regulations, guidelines and departmental standard operating procedures pertaining to the care and use of laboratory animals.


The Equipment Processing Technician 1 performs routine duties associated with sanitation, preparation, maintenance and sterilization of caging and equipment used for housing over 50,000 research animals. The Equipment Processing Technician 1 also has responsibilities including laundry, housekeeping, stocking supplies, transport and delivery of laboratory animals, caging and equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license
  • Experience operating power equipment, driving vehicles
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with others
  • Ability to operate equipment such as cage washers, pallet jacks, and autoclaves
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with sanitation processes
  • Knowledge of how diseases are spread

Working Conditions:

Exposure to dirty animal bedding, animal waste and fluids. Working within a designated biohazard area and safely handling of caging from animals that have been dosed with infectious agents and hazardous chemicals. Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when appropriate or as required. Ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary. Exposure to cleaning agents (bleach, acid, hot water). Working in warm humid environments where water and steam are present.

 

Physical Demands & Equipment Usage: 

Sufficient physical strength, agility and mobility to move caging of various sizes, shapes and weights through corridors and elevators. Sufficient physical strength and agility to move objects weighing up 10 lbs repeatedly while bending, twisting and lifting, and sustained physical ability to life objects up to 50 lbs. Sufficient physical strength to stand for long periods of time. Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
