Department Overview

The OHSU-PSU School of Public Health (SPH), Environmental Systems and Human Health (ESHH) Program, invites applicants for one full-time 12-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning September 1, 2023.  The current research strengths of the OHSU-PSU SPH are in the areas of maternal and reproductive health, infectious and zoonotic disease, health inequities arising from social structure, sexual/gender minority health, health policy, substance use disorders, ecological health, environmental chemistry, and climate change. The SPH and ESHH program also involve faculty with research strengths in occupational and environmental health who are based at OHSU’s nationally regarded Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences. The new ESHH faculty member will contribute research expertise in these areas of strength and/or expand expertise into the field of Planetary Health, including environmental racism, the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities, or implementing environmental health solutions using systems approaches.  The ESHH faculty member will also teach graduate level environmental courses and mentor graduate students.

This position reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Function/Duties of Position

The duties of this position include:

  • Develop and maintain a research program of environmental health-related investigations, collaborating across the SPH, OHSU, and PSU, as well as externally.
  • Obtain extramural funding to support research activities and advance the program.
  • Publish and/or otherwise communicate the products of scholarship, including in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Teach environmental systems and human health core and elective courses at the masters level.
  • Advise and mentor graduate students, including possibly participating in doctoral research.
  • Advance the strategic goals of SPH, contribute to the shared governance of the SPH, and engage in collegial activities in support of the SPH missions.

Required Qualifications

Position Conditions/Qualifications:

  • A doctorate degree (e.g., PhD, ScD, DrPH, DPhil) in environmental or occupational health, environmental science, environmental justice, earth and environmental systems, or a closely related discipline by the position start date.
  • Demonstrate a trajectory of increasing independence in conducting health-related research and an ongoing record of communicating products of scholarship including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Candidates for Assistant Professor should demonstrate potential to obtain extramural funding for their research program.
  • Experience with and interest in teaching graduate courses covering a variety of environmental systems and human health topic areas.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Commitment to educational equity and promotion of diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Leading research teams or potential to lead research teams.
  • Experience with contributing to teaching environmental systems and human health courses, if no direct teaching experience.
  • Experience advising and/or mentoring graduate students.
  • Teaching in a variety of settings such as in-person, remote, and asynchronous.

  3. Copies of two (2) key publications, and
  4. The names, contact information, and professional relationship to candidate for three (3) persons willing to provide a professional reference.

 

Timeline and Selection Process:

 

Review of applications will begin in early 2023 and will continue until the positions are filled. Candidates may be invited to participate in a remote screening interview. Finalists for the position will give a public presentation of their research and may be asked to give a teaching demonstration.  References will be contacted only during the final selection process.
