Function/Duties of Position

The exercise specialist provides services under the direction of the physical therapist for patient care related assistance in Rehabilitation Services. The exercise specialist also provides non physical therapy exercise training and athletic training duties. When assisting therapists, the individual works under the direction of the and supervision of a licensed therapist, and in accordance with regulatory requirements and hospital policies and procedures. When providing non physical therapy exercise training the individual carries out a maintenance exercise plan. These duties do not require direct supervision. If functioning in the role of an athletic trainer (ATC) the individual provides at-event surveillance and injury management of athletes, athlete exercise education.  The individual also provides cleaning and preparation of treatment areas and stocking of linen, supplies and other duties. The Exercise Specialist recognizes and addresses age-appropriate needs when caring for patients.  In addition, the Exercise Specialist assists in maintaining the practice environment in a clean, orderly condition. The Exercise Specialist assist with the delivery of care in Cardiac Rehabilitation and may functions as a therapy aide in an inpatient setting.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Exercise Science or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Current American Heart Healthcare Provider BLS Certification
  • One year of related experience including good communication skills for teaching
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent standing, bending, and stooping, through out the day to navigate medical equipment or perform exercise instruction is required
  • Settings in Outpatient and Acute
  • Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

  • ACLS Certification
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation experience
  • Group Exercise
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • American College of Sports Medicine (ASCM)
  • Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC) by the National Athletic Trainer Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • CSCS Certified strengthening & conditioning specialist through the National Strength & Condition Association
  • American College on Exercise (ACE)
  • AFAA
