Function/Duties of Position

The Senior staff biostatistician will provide biostatistics and study design support to faculty and staff in the Department of Anesthesiology in the OHSU School of Medicine, supporting their research portfolio, which includes basic science projects and clinical trials. 


General responsibilities include providing study design and methodology guidance, as well data management, programming and statistical analysis activities for internal and external reports, manuscripts and other publications. Statistical activities related to grant preparation, including power and sample size calculations/simulation, will be required.


This position involves significant interaction with principal investigators and their staff, requiring excellent and effective oral and written communication skills.  For example, the incumbent should be able to explain complex statistical concepts and results to biomedical researchers with little statistical training. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Statistical collaboration including, statistical analysis, data management, and statistical reporting, grant applications and manuscript preparation.
  • Contribute to discussions and decision on study designs, statistical approaches, measurement considerations, and analytical strategies with PI, co-PIs and other collaborators.
  • Professional development including keeping up with current statistical knowledge through study group meetings, seminars and professional conferences.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, or equivalent
  • At least three years of collaborative health sciences research research experience
  • Strong statistical programming skills, including experience with R, Stata, SAS, GraphPad Prism and/or other statistical software programs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing analytic sections of protocols or grant applications
  • Experience designing and analyzing data from clinical trials
  • Designing and analyzing basic science experiments
  • Demonstrated mature and effective interpersonal communications skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with appropriate demeanor to maintain good working relationships
  • The ability to forge and foster collaborative working relationships and enlist the support of faculty and staff, both within and external to the Department of Anesthesiology
  • Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines; working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability / interest in learning statistical techniques as needed to support projects as needed
  • Discretionary judgment necessary to handle confidential matters
  • Ability to analyze problems and offer creative solutions, and implement changes

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, or equivalent
  • 6-10 years experience. Desired experience includes one or more of:
    • Experience applying statistical techniques for next generation sequencing and/or miRNA data
    • Data management (wrangling) of big datasets for health research
    • Development of statistical pipelines to accommodate novel data types
    • Project management experience
