The ONPRC Integrated Pathology Core (IPC) provides high-quality, state-of-the-art conventional and advanced histology, research pathology, microscopy, and image analysis services and expertise to investigators and pathologists at the institutional, regional, and national level in support of research using NHP models in studies relevant to human health and disease. The IPC serves research programs in neuroscience, reproductive and developmental biology, cardiometabolic health, immunology, and infectious disease in nonhuman primate models as well as the histology needs of the Pathology Service Unit (PSU) in diagnostic support of the ONPRC NHP colony.

The Research Assistant 2 consults with research and pathology staff to perform requests that meet the specific aims of each project. Laboratory duties, including labeling and filing slides and cassettes, accessioning samples, data entry, preparing tissue blocks, routine H&E and special staining, coverslipping, making solutions, routine equipment maintenance, processing and embedding tissues from nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species. The successful applicant will also be trained in immunohistochemistry (IHC), next generation in-situ hybridization (ISH) and advance tissue analysis for IHC and ISH. The position requires general knowledge of universal precautions and willingness to work with Biosafety Level-2 agents and potentially hazardous chemical agents.

• Bachelor's in relevant field OR Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR 4 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience


• Manual dexterity, strength and fine motor skills to accurately perform pathology associated techniques


• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to interact in a positive and productive manner and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff


• Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail


• Ability to communicate effectively in written, email and oral formats


• Ability to work independently, in a small group setting, and one-on-one with collaborators and clients


• Ability to prioritize work demands


• Must think strategically and work efficiently to produce effective results within the time constrains of the position


• Moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 lbs.), use of fingers and both hands, cannot be colorblind, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors and reaching above shoulder


• Work involves regular and returning risks and discomforts associated with working in a histology laboratory; e.g., working with hazardous chemicals and hazardous biological substances


• Work involves regular and recurring exposure to infectious agents such as tuberculosis, macacine herpesvirus 1 (B virus), simian immunodeficiency virus, and other pathogens; handling and exposure to extremely sharp cutting instruments; and caustic, flammable, noxious, toxic and/or carcinogenic chemical reagents and solutions


• Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

• Bachelor’s degree with major courses in biology, anatomy, physiology, or related fields (or equivalent)


• At least one-year laboratory experience


• Direct experience and knowledge of histological techniques and procedures


• Experience involving tissue identification, fixation, processing, slide preparation, routine slide staining and daily operations of a histology laboratory


• HT or HTL Certification
