Department Overview

We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our Heart Center team on the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery service. The Heart Center Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides collaborative and multidisciplinary care of pediatric cardiac patients with a team of attending physicians, resident and fellow trainees.  The APP will work in a collaborative and independent manner caring for children with congenital heart disease as part of the Heart Center within the Division of CT Surgery. There will be additional close collaboration with the Division of Critical Care Medicine and Division of Cardiology.

Function/Duties of Position

The purpose of this position is to coordinate and support the needs of inpatient and outpatient care and clinical support operations for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. The APP works in close partnership with physicians, advanced-practice providers, RNs, CMAs, residents and hospital personnel to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The APP works to assure a smooth transition of patient care and education between the inpatient and outpatient arenas in order to decrease length of stay, improve patient outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. Provides modeling for staff and residents regarding excellent internal and external customer service and teamwork. The APP works in conjunction with the cardiac surgeons, APPs, RN, surgical residents, Division Director, division staff and OHSU leadership to provide services to further the OHSU’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service and the Department’s/Hospital’s goal of providing effective, efficient care.

 

 

  • Works in close partnership with physicians, advanced-practice providers, RNs, CMAs, residents and hospital personnel to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Inpatient duties involve rounding on a daily basis with the cardiac team, developing and implementing clinical plans of care and/or protocols, promoting and maintaining health of inpatients through ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families.
  • Outpatient duties involve providing patient care in clinic for pre-operative and post-operative care, wound care, urgent visits, and chronic follow-up as determined by the attending physician. Develops patient care plans with residents, nurses and the cardiac surgeons to ensure continuity of care and enhance quality of outpatient care. Promotes and maintains health through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families for outpatients; provides same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with outpatient staff and other departmental APPs.
  • Works to ensure a smooth transition of patient care and education between the inpatient and outpatient arenas in order to decrease length of stay, improve patient outcomes and increase patient satisfaction
  • Provides modeling for staff and residents regarding excellent internal and external customer service and teamwork; Provides teaching of cardiac surgical and diagnostic treatments to medical students, interns, residents, nursing staff, and other support staff on the inpatient and/or outpatient service.
  • Works in conjunction with the cardiac surgeons, APPs, RN, surgical residents, Division Director, division staff and OHSU leadership to provide services to further the OHSU’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service and the Department’s/Hospital’s goal of providing effective, efficient care. 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Current Oregon Physician Assistant License ~OR~ current Advanced Practice Nursing License and RNFA certification
  • Prescriptive authority/DEA licensure 
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Positive attitude and eagerness to learn
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with active listening skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years experience in inpatient Pediatrics or Med-Surg preferred, but new graduates encouraged to apply
  • Surgical experience in pediatric and/or adult congenital cardiac surgical procedures
