The Ambulatory Language Interpreter position within the Language Services Department provides exemplary interpretation services in English and the designated language(s) to patients, families, and staff who do not share a common language. The position will interpret for a diverse range of outpatient appointments including but not limited to primary care, medicine and surgical specialties, diagnostics, women¿s health, oncology, psychiatry, rehab services, and pediatrics. Ability to travel to different locations throughout the Portland metro area is required.

Language Interpretation Services Provides interpretation between patients, employees, and OHSU staff and Spanish-speaking patients with limited English proficiency while maintaining a friendly disposition. Understands and analyzes the spoken message, and re-expresses that message faithfully, accurately, and objectively in the target language, considering the cultural and social context. Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to patients, families, staff and providers in contributing to successful outcomes. Educates OHSU members on policies and best practices for scheduling and working with interpreters.

 

Customer Service Uses independent decision-making and judgment skills to provide prompt, efficient and courteous service to all staff, patients and their families. Utilizes customer service recovery skills to ensure patients and staff have a good experience. Identifies problematic trends in patient and employee system navigations and provides proposed solutions to management for resolution.

 

Documentation Documents interpretation encounters and keeps logs related to program and operation required for accurate billing submitted within deadlines communicated by the Supervisor. Complies with all OHSU mandatory requirements including TB Screening, required education, and immunizations and takes responsibility for following accurate timekeeping processes.

• Holds national certification and be in good standing from either the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)*, Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI)**
• Qualification or certification through the Oregon Health Care Interpreter Program under Oregon Health Authority
• High School diploma or GED Equivalent
• Three years of documented professional interpreting experience
• One year of professional experience in a medical setting
• Fluent bilingual proficiency in English and designated language(s) 
• Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially, both receptively and expressively using any necessary specialized vocabulary
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
• Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation
• Ability to assess complex situations and make ethical decisions independently
• Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills
• Proficient in MS Office Suite
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

• Bachelor's degree 
• Five years of documented professional experience
• Three years of professional experience in a medical setting
