Department Overview

The PICU is a regional referral center for all critically ill and injured children that operates 24/7. The primary purpose of the PICU is to provide optimal state of the art critical care nursing to any infant, child or adolescent who presents with a serious injury and/or illness. Care is provided for patients from birth to 18 years of age. Older patients are cared for on a case-by-case basis..

 

Function/Duties of Position

The PICU is a regional referral center for all critically ill and injured children that operates 24/7. We provide optimal state of the art critical care nursing to any infant, child or adolescent who presents with a serious injury and/or illness. Care is provided for patients from birth to 18 years of age.

  • This is a Level 1 trauma unit with 20 beds.

  • There is 24x7 Attending coverage so you will have the support you need at all times.
  • We have our own Pediatric and Neonatal Transport team. The DCH PANDA (Pediatric And Neonatal Doernbecher Ambulance) Team transports critically ill children by ambulance, helicopter, or fixed wing aircraft from hospitals all across the Pacific Northwest to Doernbecher Children's Hospital located in Portland, OR.  PANDA is the largest and longest running pediatric and neonatal intensive care transport program in Oregon.
  • OHSU is a member of Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. If ECMO support is required for Fetal Therapy, it is delivered on this unit.
  • The Heart Center does congenital defect work here and conduct intrauterine surgeries and therapies.
  • Our PICU RN’s support Renal Transplants.
  • The state of Oregon is among the top 10 across the country in terms of RN pay. 
  • This is a night shift only position. There are no rotations between night and day shift.

Required Qualifications

The qualifications for this position are the minimum eligibility requirements for an interview.  The level of required experience and expertise for each posted position is influenced by the current knowledge and skill of nurses within the department.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • BSN preferred
  • Associate Degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire.
  • For experienced nurses: Minimum 2 years pediatric acute care experience or 1 year PICU experience (applicants with adult ICU experience may be considered)
  • For new graduate nurses: A minimum of 180 hours of direct-patient care in an ICU practicum or similar setting completed within the last 12-months.
  • Must have excellent communication and reflection skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a team, and the flexibility to delegate, prioritize, and adapt in stressful situations.
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools
  • Current unencumbered Oregon RN license by start date
  • BLS (issued by the American Heart Association) and PALS certifications by start date
  • Annual Department specific education requirements include:
    • 4 hours of Trauma Education
    • Annual pediatric competencies

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of PICU experience
  • Pediatric CCRN certification

Additional Details

Usual Orientation Time:

  • Specialty Experience: 6-8 weeks
  • Experience, but not in specialty area: 8-12 weeks
  • New Graduate: 12-16 weeks
