The overarching responsibilities of this position are in support of educational, research missions, goals and objectives of the University and the Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) at the Central and Waterfront Campuses (CWC). The appointee will primarily provide direct clinical, anesthesia, peri-operative and surgical veterinary care to the colony of USDA-covered animal species in support of colony health and welfare.
This position works within a team of veterinarians and veterinary health technicians within the greater department. The individual must exemplify the following personal attributes, as they serve in an oversight capacity within the department:
Ensures the provision of veterinary care to all colony animals. Assists investigators with animal study model and experimental design development and regulatory and protocol compliance in the care and use of research animals. Specific areas of clinical oversight are USDA-covered species and surgical/anesthesia case management of those species. This position assists in indirect supervision of veterinary surgical technicians and veterinary residents through clinical, anesthesia and surgical case management.
Provides veterinary expertise on IACUC protocol development, compliance with federal regulatory requirements, OHSU and IACUC policies and DCM’s processes, guidelines and procedures. Serves as an active member of the IACUC; attends and participates in meetings, protocol review and animal facility/laboratory inspections; assists with the development of IACUC policies and Standard Procedures, facilitates communication between research and veterinary care staff; and participates in SOP, guideline and policy development.
This position also oversees the environmental enrichment program and provides or supports technical, surgical and anesthesia training for departmental staff, researchers and visiting learners.
Participation in a veterinary on-call rotation weekday, weekend and holidays.
