Department Overview

Surgery center located at the South Waterfront locations of OHSU. Currently functioning with multiple operating rooms, providing surgical care for a wide variety of specialties and services.

Function/Duties of Position

$10,000 hiring bonus

 

Surgical Preparation and Assistance. Checks schedule of surgeries to be performed during shift; reviews procedures by checking manuals outlining procedure and instruments needed; listens to dictation tape of physician performing surgical procedure, if available; assembles supplies and instruments such as needles, clamps, sponges, and scalpels; checks supplies and instruments for sterility and proper functioning; reviews preferences of physicians and nurses performing surgery; scrubs hands; arranges supplies and instruments in surgical procedure room; counts needles and sponges at start of surgery; under direction of physician or nurse, opens sterile packs, and hands instruments to surgeon; counts needles and sponges at end of surgery.

 

Post Operative Decontamination. After surgery, separates used and un-sterile supplies and equipment from those still sterilized; sterilizes instrument or sends un-sterilized instruments to central service to be sterilized; removes all disposable items such as sponges and gloves; disposes of contaminated blood and water; wipes down entire surgical procedure room with disinfectant including furniture, lamps, monitors, walls, and floors; removes all supplies not necessary for next surgical procedure.

 

Orientation for this position is approximately 12 weeks, but can vary based on candidate's experience

Required Qualifications

  • New Employees as of 9/1/2015
    • Graduated from a Nationally-Accredited organization approved by the Oregon Health Authority AND
    • Hold and maintain a national Surg Technologist Certification by NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assistants)
  • For employees hired into the Surgical Technicians classification prior to 9/1/2015 (Grandfathering Requirements): 
    • Completed a Surgical Technologist training program in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service of the USA and must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years OR
    • Current staff who did not graduate from an accredited school must provide documentation showing that he/she practiced as a Surgical Tech during at least two of the three years immediately preceding January 1, 2017 AND must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
  • BLS from American Heart Association prior to orientation
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of hands-on experience in an OR setting
