Acute Care (5A) and Family Medicine (5C) is a conceptually contiguous Family Medicine and General Medicine Acute Care unit with 14 beds on the Family Medicine unit and 23 beds on the Acute Care unit. The patient population is adults who have a variety of medical diagnoses such as Diabetes, End Stage Renal Disease, End Stage Liver Disease, Gastro-Intestinal Disorders, Adult Cystic Fibrosis, chronic and acute pain, infection, diagnostic testing, and psychiatric patients with a medical overlay.

 

Patients require acute medical and nursing interventions such as intravenous fluids, nutritional support, pain management, antibiotics administration, diabetic management, respiratory care, remote telemetry, prepping for procedures, and education to optimize self-care.

 

5A/5C admits behavioral/psychiatric patients with medical issues that may have suicidal ideation or other behavioral risks that necessitate a court hold. Creating a therapeutic environment for this population includes establishing a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship that facilitates gathering critical patient data and implementing the interdisciplinary plan of care.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is part of the multi-disciplinary team providing care to OHSU patients. The CNA provides direct or general nursing care to patients from admission through discharge under the direction of a licensed Registered Nurse and within the scope of practice defined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. They assist the patient, patient’s families and friends, nursing staff, and other OHSU personnel to assure the delivery of comprehensive quality care in a safe, confidential and comfortable environment.

• High School Diploma or GED
• Oregon CNA 1 Certification at time of hire
• BLS Certification required at time of hire, issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
