The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

The Research Support Manager oversees a group of Lab Animal and Veterinary Research/Health technicians and their Supervisor, assuring environmental sanitation, optimal animal care, regulatory compliance and research protocol support within the Oregon National Primate Research Center, Animal Resources & Research Support. The position ensures satisfactory completion of research support protocols while maintaining animal care, regulatory compliance, quality control and environmental sanitation. The manager supports research staff by implementing ONPRC policies and guidelines, developing standard operating procedures (SOP) in conjunction with veterinarians, updating SOP & GL documents, providing and documenting technical training for employees within assigned work units, reviewing Divisional Operations, purchasing supplies, technical writing and managing numerous strategic projects. The Research Support Manager oversees all husbandry, research support and facility upkeep of assigned buildings. The manager is responsible for general management of personnel issues and works as a member of a highly interdependent Operations Unit using a professional approach by providing quality control and ensuring satisfactory completion of assigned tasks. 

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of experience in lieu of degree and AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist certification and five years experience in progressively more responsible positions


• Three years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role


• Must have expertise in biomedical research animal husbandry care, animal housing, and support facilities, to independently and effectively manage, and perform/assume any/all of the responsibilities of any subordinate position in the Division


• Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment


• Effective organizational abilities


• Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, in both oral and written formats, with all investigative staff, technicians, and veterinary professional staff and interpersonal skills


• Able to read and follow written and oral communications


• Excellent ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks


• Proficient in use of a personal computer, especially Excel and Word, to work with the programs developed for use within the Division


• Proven ability to link issues/tasks and identify interdependencies within a program


• Ability to move through various animal housing areas located in several separate buildings and indoor/outdoor and outdoor facilities (this involves moving on wet and/or slick surfaces, through narrow corridors between rows of cages, and climbing stairs)


• Possess appropriate manual dexterity and skills to safely collect biological specimens, possess sufficient visual skills and abilities to make accurate observations


• A valid driver's license is required and the ability to complete an FBI security risk assessment


• Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

• Bachelor's degree in animal or biological sciences, and/or a CMAR certification


• Five years' experience in a supervisory or managerial role working with nonhuman primates and associated facilities


• ABSL-3 experience with NHPs


• Facility design, renovation and modification experience
