Department Overview

The Radiation Therapist Supervisor provides leadership to the Department of Radiation Medicine in collaboration with the Radiation Medicine Therapist Manager. They coordinate day-to-day activities of the radiation therapists to ensure that clinical schedules are met through effective and efficient clinical workflows and work environment. They are required to demonstrate technical and supervisory leadership and the ability to make decisions and solve problems as they arise.

 

The Radiation Therapist Supervisor is required to perform radiation therapy duties and procedures as staffing and workload dictates. They must have excellent customer service skills to ensure productive relationships for patients and other providers. They are responsible for guiding/overseeing day-to-day operations as it relates to treatment schedules, environment of care. The Radiation Therapist Supervisor works to continually improve treatment and scheduling processes and collaborates with the Department Quality and Safety Committee.  

 

They are responsible for human resource functions including clinical compliance and staff development of their direct reports. The Supervisor reports directly to the Radiation Therapy Manager within Radiation Medicine.

Function/Duties of Position

Sets, adjust, manipulates and controls complex high energy equipment to apply therapeutic doses of ionizing radiation for treatment. Positions patients for therapeutic treatment with a high regard for safety and care of the patients. Exercises responsible independent judgment in recognizing and reporting significant side effects induced by radiation and maintains treatment records for accurate dose administration and observation of treatment response.

 

Supports managing the day-to-day clinical schedule of all therapists for machine treatment, ensure appropriate coverage during vacation, sick time, etc.

 

Supports employee lifecycle through hiring; orientation and training; guidance and counselling; performance appraisals; disciplinary actions; creation and revision of position descriptions; terminations; professional development, and maintenance of competency.

 

Oversees the training of Radiation Therapy Students and coordinates the student clinical training program.

 

Additional duties including, but not limited to: involvement in operation efficiency and quality of care improvement projects; recommending changes and/or action; cataloguing, review and periodic update of RTT-specific cQI projects; census tracking, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have attended an accredited training program recognized by the ARRT.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Radiologic Science or healthcare field and a certificate in Radiation Therapy.
    • OR 6 additional years of recent, related experience and a certificate in Radiation Therapy.
  • 3+ years working in the field post-graduation.
  • 1 year of leadership related experience in the field.
    • OR 2 years of leadership experience in a related field
  • Must be licensed by Oregon Board of Imaging (OBMI).
  • BLS certified required.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the following equipment: Varian, Elekta, Tomotherapy, Mosaiq, ExacTrac, Calypso, Philips CT and VisionRT. 
  • Familiarity with IORT, SRS, SBRT, TBI, TSEI, and HDR.
