Department Overview

This position is responsible for complex premise distribution systems, which encompass the entire OHSU campus, HMC/Tuality & Adventist and over a dozen off campus clinics as well.  This includes vertical and horizontal copper and optical fiber distribution facilities and equipment for analog and digital communications, computer, Audiovisual Systems, “DAS” Distributed Antenna Systems, alarm circuits, and sensory services. Responsible for first-level restoration of services in response to end user or system problems reported and or observed and compliance with all FCC and State electrical codes, including EIA/TIA and BICSI standards and guidelines.  Utilizes technical equipment for trouble resolution.  Technicians must be able to work with a minimum of supervision. ITG is a 24x7 work group; this position is required to be on a rotational on-call schedule.

Function/Duties of Position

INSTALLATION AND MOVES:
  • Incumbent installs, moves, and modifies telecommunications and related equipment according to work order specifications, standards, and procedures.  This includes, but is not limited to voice and data, copper/fiber, overhead paging, special circuits, grounding and power systems, etc.
  • Incumbent also provides support connectivity of all local area network devices and work stations as well as the inter-building and intra-building copper and fiber distribution systems. 
  • Incumbent installs special circuits for audio/video, 4 wire, radio transmitter control, dedicated data circuits, and any other low voltage circuits. Audiovisual systems, and IP Video based emergency phones “2N” and code blue emergency light systems
  • Incumbent meets with customer to pre-fielding job location when necessary.  Incumbent monitors inventory levels of all equipment.  Maintains accurate records of man hours.
  • Incumbent shall maintain all work orders in work order system to track work in progress and completed work orders.
  • Performs additional functions incidental to technician activities.
 
REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE:
  • Incumbent shall provide problem analysis and first-level restoration of services in response to end user or system problems reported and or observed.
  • Repair and replace damaged or inoperable analog, digital, and VoIP voice terminals, optical fiber and copper wiring and all termination hardware.
  •  Support all local area network switches/UPS’s etc. and connections maintaining transmission from network to client device.
  •  Escalate and dispatch high-level repairs as required.
  •  It is necessary to have experience with industry standard test equipment for voice and data trouble shooting, installation, and certification.
FACILITY VERIFICATION:
  • Verify database records and assignments. 
  • Maintain database records of all circuits, special and critical emergency circuits (elevator phones, commercial Telco circuits, Fiber Circuits, overhead paging and radio control circuits) etc.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
  • Work with the Infrastructure Design team to coordinate installation of low voltage cabling and associated systems. 

Required Qualifications

Experience:
Two years of experience installing, maintaining, and repairing local telecommunication systems lines, stations, and equipment which included working with large telephone Private Branch Exchange (PBX), and digital data infrastructure installation; AND A current Limited Energy A License; AND
A current valid Oregon Drivers License; OR 
An equivalent combination of training and experience; AND
A current Limited Energy A License; AND
A current valid Oregon Drivers License.

Incumbent shall have excellent written, spoken and listening skills.
 
Incumbent shall have excellent interpersonal skills; proven and recognized as a team player with excellent coordination and communication abilities.
 
Incumbent shall have knowledge of construction trade practices and drawings to ensure installation is correct and installers work is correct and in compliance with all established codes, standards, laws, and policies.
 
 
Incumbent shall have ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently, prioritizing and accurately completing them a potentially stressful environment.
 
Incumbent shall have knowledge and understanding of the installation and maintenance standards and practices at OHSU.
 
Incumbent shall have expertise with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
 
Incumbent shall understand the impact and consequence of error;
  • Work often has significant impact on more than one department and outside the university and hospital.
  • Errors are difficult to recognize and correct and can cause considerable harm, financial, or health loss to individuals, departments, and the University, or to other individuals and groups.

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

 

  • Current Oregon Limited Energy A or B Licenses
  • Current Driver’s License

Please note: Effective Oct. 18, 2021, all OHSU employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have an approved medical or religious exception.
