Department Overview

The Musil Lab in the Department of Chemical Physiology and Biochemistry is investigating the cell biology of lens cells, with particular emphasis on discovering novel therapeutics for the most common complication of human cataract surgery (posterior capsule opacification).  This position will involve the cultivation and analysis of primary lens epithelial cells from embryonic chicks. Techniques include, but are not limited to, tissue culture, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, transient transfection, and immunofluorescence microscopy.  Analysis of Western blot data from LiCor imager requires basic computer skills.  Team member will work closely with the lab PI to carry out and analyze experiments, and will also have as a resource a Senior Research Associate conducting separate, but related studies. Function/Duties of Position

  1. Tissue culture of primary chick lens epithelial cells
  2. SDS-PAGE and Western blot  analysis of samples generated from these lens cell cultures
  3. Share of basic lab maintenance duties, including loading dishwasher and autoclaving tips and glassware
  4. Maintain complete and accurate laboratory records of study procedures and results.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR 4 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Strong organizational skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Tissue culture sterile technique
  • Needs to be able to work as a team, but be able to perform aquired skills independently
  • Self-motivated and reliable
  • Basic computer skills, including Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous technical position in a basic research lab for 1 or more years
  • Flexible work schedule

Additional Details

Lab location on OHSU’s Marquam Hill campus. Position comes with own full-length lab bench, desk, and PC computer.  Standard laboratory working hours M-F. Ability to work 1-2 hr on a weekend to feed cells desirable, but not required.  Once able to perform duties without supervision, can accommodate either an early or late work schedule (8 hr/ full day).

Ability to work in a tissue culture hood for up to several hours a day. Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including masks, safety glasses, lab coats and gloves.
