Department Overview

Position Description: The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

 

This position is under the supervision of the Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine and Chief, Emergency Services. The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objectives of OHSU and the School of Medicine. 

 

This position reports to (supervisor): Mary Tanski, MD, Associate Professor and Dept. Chair, Emergency Medicine

Function/Duties of Position

Emergency Medicine

The duties of this position include: Assisting with staffing the Emergency Department (including the ED observation unit and Pediatric Emergency Services / Minor Care Clinic) as assigned by the Chair; functioning as an (Emergency Medicine) observation unit attending; participation in education of medical and paramedic students, house staff and nurses; participating in Emergency Department quality assurance activities; and provision of on-line medical consultation.

 

Critical Care Medicine

The duties of this position include:

  • Clinical: Provision of inpatient or outpatient clinical duties in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, as assigned by the Division Chief.
  • Administrative, Educational, and Academic: Specific administrative responsibilities may be assigned by Section Chief or Chair as needed. Educational responsibilities include meeting the general expectation related to the Fellowship and Resident rotations when on call, presenting at and otherwise participating in division grand rounds and other conferences. May be assigned to a PCCM fellow as a mentor. Will participate in fellowship recruitment. Further administrative and educational responsibilities will be developed in conjunction with the division chief.

Required Qualifications

Education: MD or equivalent; Emergency Medicine Residency Certificate

Experience: Knowledge, training and experience in clinical and academic Emergency Medicine

  • Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work.

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required; ABEM or ABOEM Board certified or board eligible

  • A qualified candidate must have a current unlimited Oregon MD (or equivalent) license prior to start date. The provider must complete the credentialing process and be approved by the OHSU Professional Board to practice as an independent practitioner in an acute care/emergency setting. The provider must be registered with Federal Drug Enforcement Administration and be authorized to prescribe medications prior to start date. 

Working Conditions:

  • Hours vary.
  • Frequent interruptions in an environment of frequent change and fluctuations.
  • May be exposed to excessive auditory and visual stimulation.
  • May be required to attend out of town conferences according to hospital travel and reimbursement policies.
  • May be exposed to body fluids, tissue, possible radiation exposure, and infectious processes.
  • Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed.
  • Able to use all appropriate patient care equipment and office equipment within work area.

Physical Requirements/Demands of the Position:

  • Standing: On concrete, vinyl, or carpeting up to 4 hours per day and intermittently.
  • Sitting: Chair or stool continuous up to 8 hours per day and intermittently.
  • Changing Position: Intermittently, as needed.
  • Walking: Intermittently up to 4 hours per day on concrete, vinyl, and carpeting.
  • Carrying: Up to 50 pounds (supplies, equipment, books, papers, etc) for intermittent periods and distances.
  • Lifting: Up to 50 pounds (patients, equipment, supplies, books, etc) Intermittent throughout the day.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Up to 100 pounds, intermittent, throughout the day.
  • Bending: From the waist and knees, frequently throughout the day.
  • Reaching/Handling: Fine manipulation, repetitive, gross motor requiring full ROM in upper extremities, including overhead reaching.
  • Twisting: All ROM required, intermittent periods, throughout the day.
  • Climbing: Staircase, intermittently throughout the day.
  • Crawling: Infrequent but possible on vinyl, carpet surface.
