Department Overview

The Informatics FHIR Developer is a remote position that has the primary responsibility of supporting interoperability and integration of system-to-system communication using international information exchange standards (e.g., Health Level 7 (HL7), Integrating Healthcare Experience (IHE)). The incumbent should be skilled with RESTful APIs and health related data mapping. They will work as part of a full-stack development team responsible for all aspects of building and maintaining innovative and highly stable applications using existing and emerging technology. Initial work will be focused on building REDCap module capabilities that include Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) connections to Electronic Health Record systems and improving usability and usefulness of these tools. Together with other team members, this position will 1) develop and maintain functional, scalable, and stable applications with interoperability and FHIR coding standards and work in an agile team; 2) collaborate with a wide variety of multi-disciplinary scientific teams, research staff, and informatics staff to formulate and explore solutions to broad range of biomedical research problems; 3) translate abstract research processes into concrete software applications; and 4) communicate system/application designs to technical and non-technical peers, both verbally and in writing.

Function/Duties of Position

Candidates must have three years of experience designing and implementing complex software applications in PHP or Java. Experience with RESTful Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and working with data generated by electronic medical records is required. Design and development experience with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is strongly preferred. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a history of self-motivated and detail-oriented work. Candidates must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively and must have strong oral and written communication skills. A strong commitment to exceptional customer service is required. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, positively and effectively is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, or related scientific discipline AND 3 years of relevant experience
  • 3 years relevant experience designing and implementing complex software applications in PHP or Java
  • Experience with RESTful Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
  • Prior experience working with clinical data (e.g., generated by electronic medical records)
  • Must be comfortable working in a Linux or UNIX environment. Self-motivated; able to learn additional languages and frameworks as required
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate clearly, positively and effectively is required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively, and productively in a multi-disciplinary team environment to achieve shared goals
  • Ability to efficiently translate abstract designs into concrete software implementations
  • Prior experience with standard terminologies, like LOINC, SNOMED, or FHIR 
  • Experience defining and documenting data/business requirements
  • Working knowledge of MVC or other common software engineering design patterns
  • Transparency and participation around architecture and technology decisions
  • Rare evening and weekend hours may exist for special projects
  • This position is approved for remote work with the understanding that the employee may be asked to come into the office for critical in-person meetings which are arranged in advance with their manager and that they must be able to cover the travel costs associated with this. Details regarding schedule, required technology, environment and other OHSU conditions are detailed in the remote work documentation filled out by the employee and manager and approved by the manager. The employee must be eligible for remote work by having satisfactory job performance and completed any hiring probation (if required)
  • Must be able to work on a computer for the majority of the workday

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Informatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related scientific discipline
  • Experience developing external modules for REDCap
  • Experience working in an Agile team environment using tools like Jira and Confluence
  • Design and development experience with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) or Health Level 7 (HL7) in health IT is strongly preferred
  • Experience in an open-source environment
  • Experience using source code management tools (e.g. git)
  • resources, data mapping between HL7 or HL7 v2 and FHIR
  • Ability to develop source to target maps, perform functional testing of FHIR outputs
  • Knowledge of healthcare/clinical terminologies (e.g. SNOMED, RXNORM, etc.), healthcare information management systems and data exchange
  • Ability to see and understand whole software/hardware systems, and how elements within these systems relate
