Department Overview

OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable.

With decades of academic laboratory experience in diagnostic molecular pathology, the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories (KDL) deliver advanced diagnostic testing to make personalized medicine a reality. Specializing in designing, validating, and delivering cutting edge assays for oncology, the laboratories are CLIA certified and CAP accredited.  IMCO (Immune Monitoring and Cancer Omics Laboratory) is an arm of KDL which focuses on RUO research assays and external industry and academic collaborations.

Function/Duties of Position

We seek an experienced scientist with background in immunology/cancer biology to lead our CyTOF and mIHC assays wet bench analytics as well as the complex process of new translational assay development from project inception and scoping through validation and troubleshooting.

This position would report to the director of IMCO and work closely with IMCO’s project managers and bioinformatics team.

The right candidate must be able to work independently and with our team of lab scientists and bioinformaticists, to lead our CyTOF and mIHC efforts including all necessary wet bench work and collaborate with our bioinformatics group to analyze and interpret data generated in terms of clinical relevance, statistical and biological significance.  The ideal candidate will be expected to both work hands-on at the bench performing new and traditional lab assays (with an emphasis on CyTOF and mIHC) and also at the computer developing, creating, analyzing, and manipulating the analysis “pipeline” for the new assays. The routine work products will be 1) Planning experiments using current assays and panels for CyTOF and mIHC assuring adherence to deliverables and time sensitive deadlines 2) Validation of new assays and optimizing existing workflows following standard operating procedures and 3) detailed record keeping of current projects 4) assuring GLP-like implementation of high rigor and assay reproducibility.

Opportunities for participation in research projects/grants/papers will be plentiful. This individual will be located within OHSU Knight Diagnostic Laboratories and will report to IMCO Director. For the laboratory scientist with experience with both hands-on wet lab experimentation and new assay design/validation this position will be a great opportunity to become a key contributor to our unique environment at the intersection of patient care, translational research and industry clinical drug development.

Duties will include:

  • Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:
    • We act BOLDLY—Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
    • We SUPPORT each other—Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
    • We work as a CONNECTED team — We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone
  • Develop new assays) for eventual clinical/translational use in IMCO (concept design, sample selection, lab validation, data analysis/manipulation/interpretation/cleaning)
  • Implement and perform current CyTOF and mIHC assays as needed
  • Be part of the leadership team that develops/validates/troubleshoots new IMCO assays
  • Plan, execute, analyze, and write up results for research projects
  • Mentor/train/teach/troubleshoot with other lab members (scientists, technologists, faculty and bioinformaticists)
