Department Overview

The Biostatistician will support the statistical and data analysis needs of studies in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Center for Women’s Health. This position will be dedicated to health services research in women’s health during midlife (health access, menopause, incontinence, oncology) and complex family planning (abortion and contraception). The duties include: development of analysis plans, data cleaning, management, and analysis; preparing tables and figures for publications and grant proposals; contributing methods sections to manuscripts and grant proposals. Proficient knowledge or skills in areas such as: statistical methods, econometrics (difference in difference analysis), previous experience with Medicaid claims highly desired, coding/programming in industry-standard data analysis software (R, Stata), coding conventions and reproducible research practices, data infrastructure, cost or quality measurement, data validation, state or national health care policy and policy reforms.

 

This position will collaborate with PIs and learners (medical students, residents, fellows, MPH students, undergraduates) on the design, documentation, testing and implementation of research studies and conduct analyses in support of research proposals and protocols.  Experience with claims data, complex survey data, discharge data, vital statistics data is a plus.  We use both stata and R in the department; high level of skill with at least one is required. The position requires knowledge of and maintaining current information on multiple concurrent projects, and funding streams. The position will work with a high level of autonomy to complete work related to data management and analysis and manuscript preparation for publication in the peer-review public health/medical literature. The candidate will be skillful at communicating with a diversity of learners and Principal Investigators (PI) and able to juggle multiple projects and tight deadlines.

The Biostatistician supports the research and teaching missions of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.  This position requires Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in epidemiology and/or biostatistics. 

 

The department of OB/Gyn analyst group includes master’s level biostatisticians and a PhD health services researcher. Group members are expected to take initiative and be problem solvers. Interaction with PIs and learners is a core part of this position and we are looking for someone interested in teaching and mentoring as well as data analysis. Candidates must have a passion for women’s health and evidence-based reproductive healthcare; previous content-area experience in women’s health is a plus.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Actively contribute to development of analysis plans, data cleaning and management, and data analysis adhering to tenets of reproducible research.  
  • Develop expertise in managing and cleaning large vital records/claims databases to generate research-grade data.
  • Interact with PIs and all levels of learners in a professional and timely manner
  • Provide mentorship and participate in development and critical review of manuscripts and grant proposals for medical students, residents, fellows and faculty

Required Qualifications

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Master's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field OR
    Bachelor's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND
    3 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions with supervision, prioritize and organize workload, and multi-task with reliable and consistent delivery of timely, high-quality products and results.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in an environment of cooperation, teamwork and motivation.  Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with faculty and investigators, research team, staff, trainees, and visitors at all levels within OHSU and in the community. The ability to forge and foster collaborative working relationships and enlist the support of stakeholders.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines; working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of software, including: Windows XP, Office Professional, Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
  • Additional skills: document/photo scanning/editing, layout and design, creating tables and forms.
  • Knowledgeable of social media exchanges, and ability to properly and professionally engage within these communities for work-related purposes.
  • Using discretionary judgment in handling confidential matters.
  • Ability to analyze problems and offer creative solutions, and implement changes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and 1-2 years of research experience (can be during education/training)

Strongly preferred: 

  • Experience using scientific writing skills to create draft manuscripts.
  • Grant writing experience (for federal and foundational awards).
