Department Overview

The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Function/Duties of Position

Under the direction the head of the Behavioral Services Unit (BSU), the BSU Manager will oversee the operation and continuous improvement of the ONPRC behavioral management program, including the social management of nonhuman primates, psychological enrichment, animal training, and behavioral interventions.  This individual will supervise and organize the daily duties and workload allocation of BSU staff to ensure that they follow appropriate protocols and achieve the goals of the enrichment program in a productive way; oversee and coordinate BSU support staff, including responsibility for hiring, disciplinary actions (up to and including termination of employment), and other general management of personnel issues; identify problems with program implementation and develop recommended solutions for animals in ABSL-2, ABSL-2+, and ABSL-3 environments; ensure that USDA, AAALAC, and institutional standards and other regulatory requirements are maintained and service integrity is preserved; provide written reports which contribute to the efficient functioning of the BSU program through collection, analysis and interpretation of data, and knowledge of the goals of the BSU program; provide orientation and training of BSU and ARRS staff, and develop appropriate content for training modules; assist in scientific studies examining best ways to manage behavioral needs of ONPRC NHPs; act as primary behavior support staff in ABSL-3 areas.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science, preferably in a biology, zoology, or related field is required
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in nonhuman primate behavior is required
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment 
  • Effective organizational abilities, oral communication skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to operate and communicate effectively while meeting multiple deadlines and completing projects simultaneously
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks
  • Ability to be a “self starter” who identifies, resolves and reports on issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Proven ability to link projects and identify project interdependencies within a program
  • Ability to learn various computer software programs designed to gather and analyze data
  • Knowledge and understanding of animal behavior, preferably nonhuman primate behavior

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in science
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred
