Department Overview

The Papé Research Institute is dedicated to building a state-of-the-art research facility with a focus on studying numerous childhood diseases, such as diabetes, neurological disorders, hemophilia, pediatric cancer and metabolic disorders.  The overall focus of our research program is on the development of novel therapies for disorders with currently inadequate treatments. 

Function/Duties of Position

Searching for either a Research Associate -OR- Senior Research Associate to join a laboratory that is studying the central nervous system mechanisms of involuntary weight loss and wasting (cachexia) during the development of cancer.  The project involves the use of in vitro and murine models to understand the impact of peripheral cancers on autonomic nervous system function in the periphery. This project also has an associated clinical trial that will provide samples and data to confirm the basic hypotheses generated in the preclinical work. This NIH-funded study will define mechanisms of autonomic nervous system plasticity in the setting of chronic stress and inflammation, and will test novel therapeutics to address this debilitating condition.  

Required Qualifications

Research Associate Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience Strong organizational and leadership skills are required to handle complex data sets.

Senior Research Associate Requirements:

  • PhD in relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience OR Master's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 9 years of relevant experience Strong background in neuroscience, metabolism, molecular biology or immunology.

Additional Experience, Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience oversee junior research staff.
  • Track record of scholarly output including primary research manuscripts.
  • Experience using model organisms to study cell and developmental biology. 
  • Experience with common molecular staining and cloning techniques is essential.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills are required to handle complex data sets.
  • MS Excel, MS Word, and common software.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree cell biology, molecular biology, or neuroscience.
  • Murine models and husbandry.
  • Ability to use modern programs to manipulate next generation genomic data.
