Department Overview

Reporting to the Senior Director of OHSU Collaborations and Entrepreneurship, this position will seek to maximize the value of existing alliances and research collaborations to both the OHSU faculty and our partners.

 

The Senior Alliance Manager independently manages high volume information flow of scientific collaborations in a very organized and timely manner. They manage multiple projects and relationships along with competing priorities.

 

With minimal oversight from the Senior Director, the Senior Alliance Manager will establish new collaborations and follow projects through to completion, including identifying opportunities with the right corporate partners, proposal creation, relationship management, and final reporting. The Senior Alliance Manager works closely with Senior Director/Administration to develop strategies to strengthen OHSU and the Research mission. They guide the development of strategies and criteria to identify and engage internal and external partners, to prioritize partnerships for maximum impact for the organization and Research mission and to ensure successful management of partnerships.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Act as the project lead and project manager for large, multi-institutional, collaborative projects.
    • Oversee, manage and track all aspects of key alliances and associated projects, including timelines, milestones, legal agreements, compliance and regulatory requirements, finances, and information flow.
    • Lead, facilitate, and manage priorities and all interactions between all internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective functioning of the team.
    • Independently lead partnerships, from scouting opportunities to managing relationships to evaluation of diversifying funding mechanisms via The U.S. Economic Development Administration  Business Oregon, National Science, etc. and managing OHSU’s participation in such efforts.
    • Facilitate and foster relationships to advance OHSU research and innovation.
    • Act as first point of contact for  partners seeking to collaborate with OHSU.
    • Engage key department personnel and faculty to maintain positive working relationships and efficient processes.
    • Appropriately anticipate and address issues that arise with partnerships.
    • Identify and engage OHSU units as contributors to projects as needed.
  • Responsible for managing communications and timelines.
    • Report to stakeholders and solicit feedback during the evaluation process of partnering opportunities.
    • Understand the scientific, technical and operational viewpoints of diverse stakeholders, both within OHSU and our external partners
    • Be aware of new innovations and understand technologies and their real-world commercial applications.
    • Work closely and collaboratively with OHSU Technology Transfer and other programs with business-development type functions embedded within different groups at OHSU.
  • Lead programs and events that allow industry participation for collaboration and measure outcomes.
    • Assist with set-up of industry visits and partnering events as needed.
    • Primary contact with OHSU groups such as ITG, EdComm, Events and Protocol, to ensure meetings are organized and run smoothly.
  • Serve as a role model/mentor for other Alliance Managers at OHSU. 
    • Demonstrate leadership and effectiveness in building and maintaining industry partnerships and a cohesive Alliance Manager community.
    • Effectively communicate to OHSU leadership and stakeholders the characteristics of effective Alliance Managers, including the background, experience, temperament, and skills required for success.
    • Identify and evaluate Alliance Manager candidates for positions throughout OHSU.
    • Participate in the recruitment of such candidates, and provide training and mentoring.
    • Provide guidance, management, and training for Business Development Interns, as needed.
    • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by Senior Director of Business Development.

This position requires the ability to work remotely, and the ability to frequently report to the OHSU Portland campus for scheduled and ad hoc meetings and assignments.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s level degree in life sciences, social sciences, public policy, business or physical sciences.
  • Five+ years of experience in program management or relationship management.
  • Experience managing large-scale projects and complex multi-industry partnerships
  • Research experience in the clinical or basic life sciences
  • Demonstrated ability to form relationships with faculty, researchers, administrators, and industry staff and managers
  • Experience with hosting visits by industry partners, and in initiating follow-up interactions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate level degree in life sciences or related field.
