Department Overview

Overview: The Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research (CEDAR) center is a collaborative institution within the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. The Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. At CEDAR our mission is to detect and stop lethal cancers at the earliest stage because early detection saves lives. This is an ambitious goal, one that requires novelty, creativity, and innovation. We are comprised of biologists, chemists, biomedical engineers, computationalists, and clinicians conducting groundbreaking translational cancer research to help people maintain a high quality of life and reduce cancer mortality, to create a global early detection community, and to have a positive impact on the Oregon economy.

Our Commitment to Diversity: CEDAR is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. We are dedicated to promoting inclusion and multiculturalism by having outstanding researchers of diverse backgrounds work together on multiple projects. We encourage high-risk, high-reward research projects because defeating cancer requires out-of-the-box thinking and new perspectives. Our research is milestone driven to ensure that each project is fulfilling its stated goals.

Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:

  • We act BOLDLY—Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
  • We SUPPORT each other—Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
  • We work as a CONNECTED team—We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone

Function/Duties of Position

The International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) is a collaborative, cross-disciplinary research consortium focused on advancing technologies and access to cancer early detection. At OHSU, ACED administration lies within the Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research center (CEDAR) but the Alliance includes researchers from across the Knight Cancer Institute. The ACED Research Program Coordinator will work closely with the ACED Program Manager (Erin Watson) to implement projects, training, and process improvement of operations stemming from ACED scientific priorities and strategy.

This position has primary responsibility for the day-to-day administration of a broad range of programs and activities originating within ACED, including grant award applications, budget approvals, scheduling, meeting management, internal communications, working group oversight, event planning and logistics, documentation and meeting follow up, and process improvement initiatives. The Coordinator should be enthusiastic, detail-oriented, a strong communicator, and thrive in collaborative team-based environments. This position will promote ACED initiatives and training programs throughout the Knight Cancer Institute and will be able to communicate with researchers and administration at all levels.

While this role will be expected to work independently, this Research Project Coordinator will be an essential member of the ACED Operations Board along with the ACED Program Manager and staff at the five other ACED member centers.

  • Contribute to the execution of Alliance operational objectives – including shared infrastructure, Research Collaboration Agreements, special projects and events, working groups, sandpits, seminars, conferences and special events, educational programs and travel.
  • Manage end-to-end lifecycle of ACED’s competitive research granting program within KCI and in cooperation with all Alliance member centers. Create and promote requests for applications, develop guidelines / materials, provide oversight of allowable budgetary inclusions, administer and monitor award agreements and all interim and closeout reporting. Coordinate with ACED researchers to execute against funded awards; issues may include (but are not limited to) financial coordination, research collaboration agreements, project extensions, required reporting and changes in personnel. Communicate decisions and changes to all research and operational stakeholders and ensure data updates in grant management databases.
