Department Overview

The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.

 

Function/Duties of Position

This position is full-time. The purpose is to assist in the study of host brain cell / virus interactions using single-cell genomics.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Stereotactic injections in the rodent brain
  • Brain imaging
  • RNA sequencing library preparation.
  • large-scale data analysis and the development of novel computational approaches.
  • This position receives close supervision working with a postdoctoral researcher, performs standardized, routine procedures, and collects, abstracts, enters, analyzes data, and prepares work reports.  
  • Some innovation and problem solving required.  
  • Assists in the conduct of one or more phases of a research project.
  • Performing in vivo experiments in mouse brain,  Maintenance of mouse colony
  • Assist in molecular biology experiments (including generating libraries for next-generation sequencing)
  • Analysis of single-cell genomics data
  • Data analysis, careful recordkeeping, compilation, analysis and reporting of data
  • Traveling to national and international meetings to present on findings
  • Basic lab maintenance, and other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR  
  • Associate's AND  3 years of relevant experience OR
  • 4 years of relevant experience OR  
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience 
  • Cell culture and standard molecular biology & biochemistry skills; meticulous organizational abilities and basic computer skills
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in molecular biology or computational biology
  • Experience with fluorescent imaging & single-cell genomics analysis and next-generation sequencing experience

Additional Details

Need to be able to lift boxes and other small items as needed – approx. 20lbs.
