The purpose of the Cytotechnologist position in the Cytopathology section of Anatomic Pathology is to provide high quality patient care diagnostic services and to provide consultation for technical problem resolution that support the overall patient care activities of OHSU Hospitals and Clinics and the Department of Pathology.

• Microscopically examines, evaluates, and interprets cytopathologic specimens providing an assessment by utilizing established cytomorphologic criteria and relevant clinical data provided.
• Provides an accurate diagnosis on all gynecologic specimens determined to be within normal limits and provides an assessment on all abnormal gynecologic and all non-gynecologic samples to the pathologist for final diagnosis.
• Documents the slide interpretation results of each case he or she examines or reviews.
• For each 24-hour period, documents the total number of slides he/she examines (screened/rescreened) or reviews.
• Documents the number of hours he/she spends examining slides in each 24-hour period.
• Assists with both pathologist and clinician performed FNA procedures providing adequacy assessment on site.

 

• Cytology Lead Worker Duties – in addition to the key responsibilities & performance standards outlined above:
  
  • They serve as the CAP defined general supervisor of lab.
  • They are accessible to provide consultation to resolve technical problems.
  • They ensure documentation of the total number of slides evaluated by others.

 

• Performs LIS computer functions to report final diagnosis according to laboratory procedures.
• Performs quality control functions and workload recordings according to laboratory procedures.
• Performs data entry and record processing activities for samples, checking for accuracy of specimen labeling, requisitions, coding and billing.

 

• Performs processing, staining and coverslipping as needed.
• Processes non-gynecologic specimens and body fluid following manufacturers’ protocols and laboratory procedures for operating the SurePath equipment, centrifuge, vortex, Cytospin and automated coverslipper.
• Participates in GYN and non-GYN quality assurance activities maintaining the required standard for accuracy as established by Cytopathology Section Chief.
• Participates in teaching function for cytopathology fellows, residents, and student fellows rotating through the section.
• Communicates clearly promoting excellent customer service and teamwork.
• Provides a pleasant and professional telephone manner as a front line representative of the laboratory.
• Communicates effectively with all customers including physicians, nurses, coworkers, outside clients and patients.
• Attends continuing education activities on and off campus.
• Carries out job responsibilities in an ethical, effective, and professional manner with clear communication even under stressful conditions.
• Reports potential compliance problems using the reporting processes as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
• Models ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance, and personal integrity.
• Participates in compliance training programs.
• Understands and complies with the Code of Conduct and meets all OHSU Hospital Core Competencies and departmental competencies, procedures, applicable rules, and regulations.

• A baccalaureate degree in Cytotechnology and ASCP certification as a Cytotechnologist;
  • OR baccalaureate degree plus twelve months didactic and practical training in a certified cytology school and ASCP certification as a Cytotechnologist.
• Knowledge of cell morphology, and cytologic changes associated with malignant and benign disease processes, inflammatory/reparative changes, and organisms.
• General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials and techniques, regulations, and safety.
• Skill in handling of laboratory specimens, record keeping, and laboratory equipment.
• Skill in identifying cells and cell morphology.
• Skill in using computer systems including:  word processing, dedicated LIS/HIS, etc.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately, and operate and maintain standard lab equipment.
• Ability to initiate procedures and policies to improve work flow and work accuracy in the section.
• Ability to work independently within established guidelines, using good judgment in making decisions regarding cases, adjust to rapidly changing priorities, and apply problem solving skills.
• Ability to demonstrate performance of job duties to trainees.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without accommodation.

Environment, Physical Demands & Equipment Usage

 

Positions in the laboratory and environs may require working flexible schedules including nights weekends and holidays; working at multiple laboratory or hospital sites; traveling between laboratories and sites by stairs, elevator, tram, shuttle or other means; exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical hazards, radiation; working in a somewhat noisy and crowded environment; wearing gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment for long periods of time; experiencing temperature fluctuations in the building.

 

Positions in laboratory departments require the ability to carry and lift up to 30 lbs.; ability to stand or sit for 4-8 hours depending on the tasks assigned; ability to bend, reach, and carry as required for assigned tasks; ability to utilize simple and complicated laboratory equipment and computers; ability to utilize multi-line phones, pagers and office equipment.
