Telecommunicators handle emergency and non-emergency calls for service, maintain two-way radio contact with University Police Officers, Community Service Officers, and maintenance personnel, monitors campus alarms, operates the Access Control system, and operates telephones and communications equipment in a communications center of OHSU within the Department of Public Safety (University Police Department). Telecommunicators provide customer service to a wide range of stakeholders, making notifications to impacted departments and provides the focal point for emergency services for the campus and institution. Responsible for problem solving, critical thinking, assessing and prioritizing appropriate response and management of calls for service.

 

Function/Duties of Position

  • Monitor and manipulate multiple media sources of information including numerous radio frequencies, telephone lines, several data terminals, alarm systems and video monitors.  Prioritize and dispatch both emergency and non-emergency calls as required using established guidelines.
  • Receive, dispatch and document calls for service or information, including fire emergencies, medical emergencies, crimes in progress or other high stress emergent needs.  Maintain a computerized log of all activities or service requests.
  • Receive, dispatch and document calls for maintenance assistance received via telephone, radio or walk-in traffic.
  • Represents OHSU Police by phone or in person when interacting with OHSU staff, students, and contractors relative to service information, signing out of keys to facilities and using access control system.
  • Represents OHSU Police by phone or in person when interacting and providing services with patients and visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Heavy multiline call center or telephone experience
  • Radio Communications 
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Operate a multi-line phone and radio system.
  • Ability to multi-task and perform many simultaneous functions while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Receive and prioritize both emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Learn the geography of the OHSU campus and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to effectively use oral and written communication in performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Must pass a law enforcement background investigation.
  • Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certified within first 6 months of employment
  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or College Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years: dispatch or heavy customer service experience.
  • 911 Emergency Communications experience
  • Prior experience working with a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) application

Additional Details

Salary Range: $26.13 - $35.33 per hour

 

This position must work multiple shifts (days, evenings, nights), weekdays/weekends, and holidays. Work is in an area with moderate noise due to phones and radio equipment. The position may require long hours due to emergency situations or workload, and is subject to mandatory overtime.

 

This position may require long hours sitting or standing and viewing multiple computer monitors.
