Department Overview

As the state's only academic health center, OHSU's breakthrough research leads to new cures, new standards of care, and a better understanding of the basic science that drives biomedical discovery. OHSU researchers are exploring new basic, clinical, and applied research frontiers. The Department of Psychiatry has active clinical and basic research programs related to mental health disorders. Researchers in the Department are awarded over $5 million annually in grant activity over a dozen funded faculty members. The researchers within the Department of Psychiatry are actively involved and focused on various mental health conditions and cross-disorder mechanisms. These include ADHD/attention disorders, autism spectrum disorders, brain development in healthy and at-risk youth, post-traumatic stress disorder and effects of trauma, depression, psychoneuroimmunology (interactions between the immune and central nervous systems), alcoholism and risk, drug abuse and addiction, psychological aspects of pain management in adult veterans and in children, and implementation science.

The Research Nurse Care Manager (NCM) is a Registered Nurse (RN) who provides clinical services as part of a pragmatic effectiveness randomized clinical trial. This trial is aimed at improving pain treatment outcomes for patients living in rural areas by enhancing patient-centered care, with a focus on increasing access to pain care services and resources. The Research NCM reports to the Principal Investigator and will follow standards outlined within the research protocol.

As part of this position, the Research NCM provides care and counseling of persons in the promotion and maintenance of health, as well as in the prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process. This includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems. To accomplish these tasks, the Research NCM employs such services as:

  • Case finding, health teaching, health counseling
  • Provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being
  • Execution of plans of care and/or medical regimens

The Research NCM conducts comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments of patients with chronic pain using telehealth platforms, addressing concomitant issues, including mental health, substance use, medical comorbidities, and concurrent medication use. The incumbent completes comprehensive medical record reviews of patients and provides clinical recommendations from the data generated and clinical assessments to create individualized plans of care. The Research NCM tracks all enrolled patients, provides follow-up services, and documents services provided to patients in a designated database. The nurse will also facilitate a 6-session pain education and coping group.

The Research NCM is an essential member of the patient care team, acting as the key communication link between the patient and clinical resources. As a member of the research team, the NCM translates and implements study operations to improve outcomes for patients, including strategic planning to meet the goals of the trial. The Research NCM practices in accord with professional standards, core values, and with a commitment to service excellence, embodying the professional role of scientist, leader, practitioner, and knowledge transferor.
