Department Overview

The OHSU Department of Psychiatry, part of the OHSU Brain Institute, focuses on providing excellent clinical treatment to our patients, leading innovative research, and offering hands-on training for the next generation of psychiatrists. Our specialists care for people of every culture and background and it is our mission to value and show appreciation for diversity, showing respect for all people who we treat, teach, and serve.

The appointee in the Department of Psychiatry (either PHD, MD, or MD/PHD) shall conduct independent research in the area of developmental psychopathology and mental health/illness and may provide clinical and educational services as will be determined, in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

Function/Duties of Position

The Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University is seeking to make an open-rank faculty hire during the next academic year, as part of our growing scientific efforts in the Center for Mental Health Innovation (CMHI). The mission of the CMHI is to advance scientific discoveries in mental health and rapidly translate those into real-world practices, thereby propelling the transformation of mental health care and improving lives. The CMHI is well-endowed and engages exceptional scientists in multiple areas of developmental psychopathology research, including developmental origins of mental health (maternal and infant), child and adolescent behavioral risk, ADHD, depression/suicide risk, and substance use, as well as using multiple methodologies including genetics, epigenetics, neuroimaging, neuropsychology and cognitive computational methods, and advanced analytics for prediction science. Clinical trials using novel treatments and precision biomarkers are underway. The Department and the CMHI are seeking applications candidates to join our faculty in the Fall of 2024. We are seeking clinical or translational scientists conducting research in any area of developmental psychopathology that will either build on or complement existing CMHI research strengths. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research interests align with the CMHI mission and who are looking to translate scientific discovery into clinical practice. In addition, while the position is open-rank, we are interested in candidates with demonstrated leadership interest and potential. OHSU is well equipped with a state-of-the-art neuroimaging center, outstanding core facilities and laboratories, a strong pre- and post-doctoral training infrastructure, and proximally-housed developmental and clinical researchers with ample space for human subjects study data collection. Portland, Oregon remains one of the most desirable places to live in the country and continues to attract a net inflow of residents, due to its mild climate, spectacular scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities, and rich cultural scene. The successful applicant should have the following qualifications:

  • A Ph.D., MD, or MD/Ph.D. with training in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, psychiatry, behavioral neuroscience, behavioral genetics, or others).
  • If intending to conduct clinical work, the applicant must be licensed or license eligible in Oregon.
  • A demonstrated capability to attract extramural research funding.
  • A strong scientific publication record for rank or stage of career.
  • A well-articulated program of research in any area of developmental psychopathology, focused either on a major class of psychopathology, major risk factors, key processes, clinical trials/implementation science, precision medicine, or new methodology and instrumentation.
  • Interest and ability to mentor trainees in clinical psychology and other fields.
  • Willingness to participate in the educational mission of the University via assisting with doctoral level courses, graduate student mentoring, residency training, or other training programs.
  • A commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
  • Participation in the scholarly life of the University via Grand Rounds, consultation, and instruction.
  • Service on Departmental and University committees as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in relevant field and with relevant training to conduct nationally recognized research in any area of developmental psychopathology. If a clinician-scientist planning to do clinical work as well, then must be licensed or license eligible in Oregon.
