Function/Duties of Position

This position is for a Senior Research Assistant in the Knight Cardiovascular Institute, supporting research focused on coronary physiology (microcirculation) and vascular biology. Applicant must have previous research laboratory experience with handing rodents. They will be required to manage rodent colonies, genotype rodents using PCR, perform immunohistochemistry and assist in surgery. Other technical expertise required will include western blotting, managing cell cultures, and performing ELISA experiments.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field AND 1 years of relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience:

  • Experience in animal handling, rodent husbandry and genotyping
  • Experience in molecular biology applications including but not limited to western blotting, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and quantitative PCR
  • Familiarity with cell culture techniques
  • Experience in analysis of experimental data

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Skills/knowledge of standard animal handling and husbandry practices
  • Skills in navigating and maintaining animal use protocols
  • Skill/knowledge in basic genotyping principles used in rodent colony management
  • Skills/knowledge in protein/DNA prep, Western Blotting, ELISA and immunohistochemistry
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding scientific data documentation and collection, data integrity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in animal handling, rodent husbandry and genotyping
  • Experience in cardiovascular research
  • Familiarity with endothelial and vascular cell culture techniques
  • Experience in laboratory compliance with OHSU IACUC, DCM, Biosafety, and radiation safety and DEA for use of controlled substances
  • Experience in scientific writing

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Skills/knowledge in animal surgical models
  • Skills/knowledge in advanced imaging modalities (2-photon, confocal, etc.)
