Department Overview

This level 2 coding position provides support to the Department of Neurology. As the Coding specialist 2 you will be responsible for coding of physician’s fees. This position requires experience in coding and requires a current certification with AAPC or AHIMA. You will review, abstract, and code treatment and procedure information from outpatient medical records, for the purpose of providing medical coding information for appropriate billing of health care services and professional fees, to ensure physician compliance with Federal, State, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.

Function/Duties of Position

Medical Record Review

  • Responsible for supporting multiple specialties within Neurology (including Aging & Alzheimer’s, Movement Disorders, General Neurology, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular, Headache, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Wellness, Resident Clinic, EMG/EEG, etc.). This position requires certification with AAPC or AHIMA.
    • This position is responsible for reviewing and coding from clinical documentation abstraction, applying the correct coding CPT, ICD- 10-CM and modifiers to evaluation and management services and outpatient procedures. This position ensures that the documentation supports the levels or types of services billed and ensures the documentation is in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid billing regulations, provider documentation guidelines, CPT documentation and CMS coding guidelines. 
    • Responsible for meeting performance standards set for accurate and timely submission of charges and coding for professional services rendered at OHSU and outside clinics where OHSU providers are rendering services. 
    • Requires maintaining an hourly productivity standard and quality standards as set by Neurology based on Industry Standards.
    • Coding Work Queue assignment will vary based on business needs or management assignment.
    • Will require attendance at various meetings via conference call, WebEx, Teams, etc.

Education

  • In conjunction with the Provider Educator and the Integrity Department, provides education to medical providers and departments regarding coding, billing and documentation requirements relative to CMS.
  • Assist with updating physician billing SmartSets with new coding updates.

Administrative Support

  • May provide a variety of general administrative support such as answering phones, filing, providing customer service for coding/DRG/CPT/ICD-10-CM information.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Certification in one of the following (as indicated by the position description) Coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA:
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA),
    • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT),
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Active AHIMA membership may be required for some positions.
    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders; OR
    • equivalent certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum two years of hospital or professional services (dependent on position) experience reviewing, abstracting, and coding medical records using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels, physicians, administrative management, leadership, etc.
  • In depth knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, Federal Register, Federal and CMS guidelines. 
  • Proficiency with word processing and excel spreadsheets. 
  • Ability to work as a team player.
  • Basic medical terminology understanding.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Advanced degree

Experience:

  • Prior Neurology, Professional Diagnostic, Behavioral Health coding experience. 
  • Experience in an academic center.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Prior experience with Epic.
  • Successful completion of Epic courses.
