The purpose of Safe Patient Mobilization Tech is to assist nursing staff to prevent/reduce back, shoulder, and neck injuries, related to manual lifting/transfer of patients.  The Safe Patient Mobilization Tech will be measured by the reduction in back injuries among health care providers.  The Safe Patient Mobilization Tech  will provide Patients and family education regarding transfer techniques to be utilized in the post- hospital setting as appropriate. This individual may also participate on TQM teams and employee development programs.  All employees must be oriented to meet our customer satisfaction goals and objectives. The Safe Patient Mobilization Techs responds to Massive Transfussion Protocol which takes priority over all other tasks.        

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assesses patient needs before each movement, including type of techniques to be performed, condition of patients, state of patient’s physical  disability, and whether an RN should be present to supervise due to the patient’s precautions.  Coordinate availability of necessary equipment for use in transfer/lift.  Demonstrate the appropriate sling to use depending on patient’s weight, and or mid section.   Safely performs complex patient lifts/transfers.     
  • Respond in a timely fashion (3-5 min.) to Safe Patient Mobilization request via pager.  Assesses patient’s needs before each movement, pre- visualizes each lift/transfer before execution to include: surveillance of entire room, removal of hazards (wire on  floor or furniture that may be obstacles ect.)  Requesting any visitors to leave the room to allow more room for the move, and discussing each move by the team before initiating the lift/transfer.
  • Times lift/transfer in a manner to never rush.  Practice a slower count coordinates the exact moment of the lift between partners, allows one partner to cancel the lift before designated time if needed.  Demonstrate effective use of  mechanical lifting equipment, always uses a mechanical device for each total body/transfer.  Document patient care delivery on the lift team daily log accurately and on a shift by shift basis.  Record patient demographic information, precautions taken, equipment used  etc., on form.       

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Knowledge of  Hospital Transportation Procedures. Experience in safe lifting, and transporting of patients, euiqment, and supplies. Six months experience in an acute or long-term healthcare facility or 90 days training with patient transportation.
  • Ability to determine, troubleshoot and respond to lift team calls in a timely manner.  
  • Ability to prioritize assignments to maximize customer satisfaction. 
  • Must be physically able to perform transportation duties safely and unsupervised. 
  • Good communication skills with the public and staff. The ability to function under stressful situations. 
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions. 
  • Within 90 days of hire the employee will take the following certification programs. 
    • CPR, Body Mechanics, 0/2 gauge handling, Isolation precautions. 
  • All employees must report for work at their assigned time, and report to work in the proper uniform. Ability to adhere to transportsation services attendance policy.
  • This position must also take the mandatory on line training courses offered here at OHSU.

Additional Details

Pay Range: $20.77 - $27.70 per hour

  • Rotating shifts if needed. Exposure to human and tissue/fluids.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing Safe Patient Mobilization tasks, transporting patients and materials through out OHSU campus. Ability to carry and lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to push 300 pounds. Ability use departmental equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs, medical oxygen, vertical lifts, and hover matts.
