Department Overview

The OHSU Research Integrity Office (ORIO) is charged with protecting and assuring compliance under the laws that govern the rights and welfare of human and animal subjects, and the oversight of basic and applied scientific research at OHSU.

 

This position requires the ability to work remotely, and the ability to report to the OHSU Portland or West campus on short notice.

Function/Duties of Position

Role of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).  The IACUC is a federally mandated board charged with oversight and approval authority for animals used in research, testing or teaching. The role of the IACUC is to: (a) review and approve, withhold approval, modify, monitor and otherwise take action on proposed use of animal subjects for research, testing or teaching; (b) develop policies, standards and procedures governing the conduct of care for animals used for research, testing or teaching; (c) ensure that best practices are established for the use of animals in research , testing or teaching; and (d) take action to assure that researchers comply with laws and regulations regarding animals used for research, testing or teaching. The IACUC reports to the Institutional Official, who is the Vice President for Research.

 

This position is responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, maintenance, and oversight of an integrated Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP), comprising oversight of animals used for research, testing or teaching on the OHSU West Campus (WC) and Central and Waterfront Campuses (CWC). In fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, the Director will collaborate with a broad spectrum of organizational partners, including but not limited to: OHSU faculty and department leadership; the OHSU Institutional Official; the Chief Research Officer and other executive leadership; directors and managers; Legal; Human Resources; research administration; other various committees throughout OHSU. This position facilitates integrity at OHSU by providing leadership related to animal care and use  and related areas as follows:

  • Implementing, revising, and maintaining applicable policies and procedures (program-specific and OHSU-wide) to maximize integrity, compliance, effectiveness, efficiency, and reflect current trends;
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining training and communication programs for the OHSU community;
  • Serving as an expert resource for animal care and use issues to the OHSU community;
  • Continuous process improvement related to animal care and use; and,
  • Serving as a management representative on assignments for both internal and external constituencies.

Specific areas of responsibility include:

  • Responsible for the direction and oversight of the OHSU ACUP.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the OHSU ACUP.
  • Periodically revises the ACUP due to changes in federal/state regulations and the needs of OHSU.
  • Collaborates with OHSU leadership to effectively incorporate the ACUP within OHSU operations.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of audit, monitoring, and training processes to ensure that areas of risk are identified and addressed.
  • Ensures timely and appropriate corrective action is taken when necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or above)
  • Seven years of IACUC program management experience in an academic medical center or large multi-disciplinary system.
  • Exceptional people skills.  Ability to interact in a positive, productive manner with providers, administrators and leadership (demonstrating sensitivity, tact, and professionalism).

  • Extensive knowledge of best practices for animal care and use compliance at an academic medical center and/or medical institution and understanding of risk assessment methodologies and systems thinking. 

  • Expert knowledge in federal and state laws, regulations, and guidance relating to animal care and use compliance.

  • Ability to deal effectively with difficult situations.

  • Ability to analyze information and construct an action plan to resolve issues.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Effective organizational abilities, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to operate and communicate effectively while meeting multiple deadlines and completing projects simultaneously

  • Advanced proficiency with electronic systems and software. 

  • IACUC experience in an academic medical center

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree or additional emphasis/training/education in related field.
  • Ten years of management experience in an academic medical center or large multi-disciplinary system.
  • Application of risk-based decision making in furtherance of organizational efficiency and compliance.

  • Demonstrated leadership and formal/informal influence skills.

  • Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA)
