Department Overview

Pediatric Neonatal Doernbecher Transport Team (PANDA) provides specialized critical care transport services for patients from premature newborns to pediatric patients up to the age of 18. The transport team provides inter-facility transfers and is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS). PANDA does not respond to scene calls, and patients over 18 are considered on a case-by-case basis, limited to transport to pediatric units.

Function/Duties of Position

The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities, and patient populations. The Clinical RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics. Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State AND Washington State Registered Nurse Licenses
  • Minimum of 5 years’ of experience on an interfacility neonatal and pediatric transport team.
  • For PICU trained RNs must have one of the following:

    • Code team
    • Rapid response team member
    • Charge RN experience

    For NICU trained RNs must have:

    • Resuscitation and/or delivery room attendance experience required
  • BLS, PALS, NRP, and ACLS certifications at the time of hire. BLS, PALS, ACLS must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application)
  • Successful completion of pre-hire physical capacity testing location for appointment given at time of hire.

Required within the orientation period:

  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum Certification
  • STABLE

Required within 2 years of hire:

  • Certified Neonatal Pediatric Transport Certification

*Certification expectations and courses differ from the standard OHSU minimums.

 

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years Pediatric Intensive Care at a level I trauma center OR/ 5+years Neonatal Intensive Care Experience at a level IV NICU
  • AND/informal leadership role i.e. Charge nurse experience, nursing educator, committee involvement

Additional Details

Department Specific Working Conditions:

  • Due to the independent nature of transport, PANDA nurses are expected to perform critical care procedures without in-person physician support.
  • May be required to work day or night shifts, overnight transports, and 24-hour shifts based on team operational needs. Flexibility in personal schedules after scheduled shifts is essential, as transports must be completed regardless of shift end time. Compensation for work beyond normal shift hours will follow the current Bargaining Agreement.
  • On-call availability with the ability to depart within 45 minutes of activation.
  • Perform patient care within confined spaces of ambulances, fixed-wing aircraft, or helicopters, regardless of climate or altitude conditions.
  • Ability to communicate and provide patient care without medical direction if communication is not available or lost.
  • Adhere to approved protocols and understand communication/documentation requirements when care extends beyond protocols.
  • Safely and effectively utilize transport and monitoring equipment, including basic troubleshooting during transport.
  • Document on the PANDA election medical record and charting systems safely during transport.
  • Exposure to usual hospital environmental conditions including possible exposure to blood and body fluids for which staff is provided education and protective equipment to minimize risk.
  • Physical Requirements:

Anticipated Orientation Period:

  • New Graduate RNS are NOT eligible for PANDA positions.
  • New Hires with Transport Specialty Experience: Up to 3 months of orientation time will be determined based on exposure to patient population, adherence to standards and successful completion of orientation objectives. Evaluation by the PANDA Specialty Practice Leader and PANDA Manager.
  • Experience in non-specialty area (no previous transport experience): Approximately up to 8 months, will be determined based on exposure to patient population, adherence to standards and successful completion of orientation objectives. Evaluation by the PANDA Specialty Practice Leader and PANDA Manager.
