Department Overview

The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute is a pioneer in personalized cancer treatment and research, led by Dr. Brian Druker, whose development of Gleevec transformed Chronic Myeloid Leukemia from a fatal disease to a manageable one and proved that targeted therapies can work. The institute focuses on precision oncology, the early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer, and creating a welcoming and supportive environment for its caregivers, researchers, and support personnel. Knight affiliates subscribe to three guiding principles: we are bold, we are supportive, and we work as a connected team in our fight to end cancer as we know it.  We’d love for you to join us!

A research assistant 2 position is available for a motivated candidate to join the Saultz laboratory in the Leukemia Center within the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute is a world leader in treating leukemia. Our director, Dr. Brian Druker, is an internationally recognized pioneer in precision cancer medicine. Dr. Druker played a central role in developing Gleevec, a daily pill for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) that has saved tens of thousands of lives. The Saultz lab focuses on the immune system, particularly NK cells, and how to augment NK cellular therapy in AML.

Function/Duties of Position

This position will assist in research that shows how NK cell recognition of the tumor may change throughout treatment and how could we use the leukemia specific vulnerabilities, including the maturation state of the stem cell and genetic alterations to develop improved immunotherapy strategies for AML patients.

1. Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:

  • We act BOLDLY—Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
  • We SUPPORT each other—Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
  • We work as a CONNECTED team — We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone

2. Maintain long-term tissue cultures for experimental purposes.

3. Plan and perform experiments related to the research goals of the project, including Molecular and cellular biology assays, flow cytometry, mammalian cell culture, biochemistry assays, utilization of in-vivo models and associated techniques, cell isolation and DNA/RNA purification from bacterial cultures, mammalian cell cultures, in-vivo models and patient samples.

4. Perform functional drug screening and CRISPR/Cas9 library screens on cell lines.

5. Collect, record, organize and analyze data.

6. Read literature, data and figure preparation, attend and present at lab meetings.
