Department Overview

Research Assistant position in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine to work on NIH and VA funded translational and collaborative projects to study novel mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and aging. The major focuses are to investigate the regulation of smooth muscle cell phenotypic switch in the development of vascular aging and dementia as well as diabetic vasculopathy, using a comprehensive array of molecular, cellular and multi-Omics approaches, genetically modified mouse models, and human tissues.

 

Motivated individuals with a passion for medicine and science, strong verbal and written communication skills, an interest working in a collaborative team environment are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in relevant fields including cell culture, animal handling, cardiovascular pathophysiology and molecular biology techniques is desirable. Position offers future opportunities for exposure to academic medicine and research, scientific collaboration, and manuscript authorship.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Conducting and analyzing scientific research, using in vitro cell culture, in vivo animal models, and archival human tissues, preparation of written reports and supporting development and implementation of new experiments.
  • Maintenance of lab equipment and facilities and other activities to ensure smooth lab operation.
  • May help train new lab staff and interns regarding laboratory protocols and procedures. Other general lab duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree; OR
  • Associate's degree and 3 years of relevant experience; OR
  • 4 years of relevant experience; OR
  • an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Experience with microscopes and basic laboratory equipment

  • Experience with in vitro cell culture and in vivo animal handling techniques
  • Organizational skills and basic computer skills

  • Record keeping

  • Interest in science and medicine

  • Effective communication skills

  • Ability to work independently with supervision and ask appropriate questions

  • Ability to learn new software and technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and training in molecular biology and cardiovascular research
  • Experience with processing imaging data
