The purpose of the Medical Laboratory Scientist position in the Special Immunology and Coagulation section is to provide high quality patient care testing services that support the overall patient care activities of Oregon Health & Science University Hospitals and Clinics and the Department of Pathology. The person in this position is authorized to perform testing in the following areas: Hemostasis and Thrombosis, Immunology, Chemistry/Toxicology, Biochemical Genetics and Electrophoresis. The person filling this position will be of professional demeanor and perform their duties with an attitude that will best serve the clients of the department.

Function/Duties of Position

Performs testing for laboratory section using various laboratory instrumentation, reagents and reagent kits.

  • Follows written procedures, processes and policies.
  • Determines acceptability of specimens and results.
  • Performs instrument maintenance, start-up and QC, checks instrument parameters, and documents any action taken to bring instruments within specifications.
  • Performs troubleshooting procedures if indicated by daily QC or other checks and documents action.

Prepares and processes samples for testing.

  • Performs sample processing duties: Checks in samples, prints work lists, enters results, reviews work, files paperwork, etc.
  • Performs all computer functions using LIS/HIS according to established procedures and makes required comments in computer.
  • Organizes study samples and data using manual or computer-based methods.

Reviews and compiles testing results and paperwork for interpretation by lead, Technical Coordinator, manager or faculty.

  • Ensures that all patient and QC results are calculated and recorded according to standard procedures.
  • Checks results for plausibility and consistency with diagnostic criteria.
  • Works with faculty to improve efficiency and quality of work.
  • Works with faculty to evaluate and adapt new tests and methods for pre-analytical sample preparation in all methods used by the laboratory in order to improve the efficiency, accuracy and throughput of testing. Carefully documents method development ideas/procedures in writing
  • Writes new and revises old laboratory procedures
  • Assists with correcting reports, reviewing work lists.

Calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and procedures.

 

Other duties.

  • Assists with inventory of reagents and supplies, according to established procedures.
  • Answers phones, transfer calls, calls or pages physicians, and documents appropriately.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and training.
  • Completes competency training, annual review of policy and procedure manuals and safety review as scheduled.
  • Trains new employees, students, residents and fellows.
  • Performs other projects as assigned or requested by manager, technical coordinator or lead worker.
  • This position requires the employee to work variable hours, weekends, some holidays and on call. Working alone is often required on the off shifts. Excellent attendance required.
  • Performs requirements for staff members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics, and understands and complies with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and departmental policies and procedures, and other applicable procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Communicates and works effectively as part of a team, and interacts with a variety of clients including doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and patients, maintaining a customer service focus at all times.
  • Refers questions to technical coordinator, lead worker or lab manager when needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Science which includes a clinical lab externship, and current certification as MT (ASCP), or MLS (ASCP) within 90 days of hire. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR
  • Completion of a 2-year accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, plus MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 90 days of hire, and 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological field, and four-year’s experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical laboratory performing testing and related tasks. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004.
    • Note: experience in a specialty lab area will only qualify candidate to work in that specialty area.
  • This position requires a highly motivated individual who can work independently within established guidelines. Personal integrity, efficiency, and ability to adjust to rapidly changing testing priorities are essential. The incumbent must be able to work in a busy laboratory while maintaining a professional attitude.
  • General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials and techniques, regulations, and safety.
  • Skill in handling of laboratory specimens, record keeping, sterile technique, and laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in identifying cells and cell morphology
  • Skill in using several different computer systems including: word and excel processing, dedicated LIS-, etc.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately, and operate and maintain standard lab equipment.
  • Ability to initiate procedures and policies to improve workflow and work accuracy in the section.
  • Ability to work independently within established guidelines, using good judgment in making decisions regarding case and apply problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate performance of job duties to trainees.
  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole

Preferred Qualifications

  • MT(ASCP) or MLS(ASCP) with recent immunology, special coagulation, mass spectrometry or electrophoresis experience.
  • At least one-year experience in analytical lab setting doing high complexity work including mass spectrometry operation and method development.

Salary Range: $35.81 - $49.17 per hour

  • Positions in the laboratory and environs may require working flexible schedules including nights weekends and holidays; working at multiple laboratory or hospital sites; traveling between laboratories and sites by stairs, elevator, tram, shuttle or other means; exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical hazards, radiation; working in a somewhat noisy and crowded environment; wearing gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment for long periods of time; experiencing occasional temperature fluctuations in building.
  • Positions in laboratory departments require the ability to carry and lift up to 30 lbs.; ability to stand or sit for 4-8 hours depending on the tasks assigned; ability to bend, reach, and carry as required for assigned tasks; ability to utilize simple and complicated laboratory equipment and computers; ability to utilize multi-line phones, pagers, dictation equipment, and office equipment
