Department Overview

The Nurse Manager (NM) is a Registered Nurse (RN) who is responsible for upholding excellence in the provision of nursing care through the implementation of the Profession Practice Model. The Nurse NM is responsible for operational, human resources, quality, and financial management of the assigned inpatient unit. The NM works with the interdisciplinary team to translate and implement organizational and division priorities into the unit’s operations. The NM ensures a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff. The NM partners with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure the delivery of safe, quality patient care and compliance with administrative, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. The NM implements quality and safety initiatives, leads process improvement, ensures adherence to hospital and clinical standards of performance, and human resource management. The NM ensures adherence to regulatory standards, bargaining unit agreements, hospital and clinical standards of performance, and human resource management. The NM creates and sustains a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff.

 

The NM’s decisions and actions are based on the ethical principles outlined by the American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Nursing. The NM practices in adherence with the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Nursing Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrators, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing, the Oregon State Board of Nursing’s Nurse Practice Act, and within the context of the Nurse Executive Competencies developed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). Function/Duties of Position

Department Overview:

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high stress setting, to adapt to rapidly changing work environment, and to respond to multiple complex events simultaneously.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication, database skills and ability to type 45 words per minute.

  • Proven ability to work in teams as well as independently.

 

  • OHSU Nurse Manager 2 positions include an option to telecommute (work remotely) one day per week.  On 10D, increased flexibility is required due to the size, complexity, and unique nature of the unit. Therefore, the decision to work remotely must account for the needs of the unit, and the presence of nursing leadership is a priority
  • Requires prioritization of multiple projects, activities, and assignments
  • Frequent interruptions in an environment of frequent change and fluctuations
  • Exposure to chemotherapy and radioactive mediation and lab samples for which staff is provided education, dosimeter, and protective equipment to minimize risk
  • May be exposed to excessive auditory and visual stimulation
  • For inpatient units: accepts 24/7 accountability and responsibility to include possibility of stepping into a clinical or clerical role as needed
  • May be required to attend out of town conferences according to hospital travel and reimbursement policies
  • Subject to computer work for several hours as needed
  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers including ensuring safe conditions for patients, families and staff.

  • Department Specific Summary:
  • HRC 10D  Adult Acute Care General Medicine is an 8 inpatient, 4 infusion chair, and 6 exam room nursing unit providing 24/7 care for specialty medicine/surgical epilepsy monitoring patients and inpatient, ambulatory, and clinic research participants.  
  • Department Specific Responsibilities:
  • The nurse manager collaborates with, and reports up through both the adult acute care nursing and the research OCTRI/CTRC structure.

Required Qualifications

  • BSN or higher degree in nursing; AND Master’s degree in nursing or related field (e.g. MBA with Healthcare Administration concentration, Public Health); OR Enrolled in nursing or related graduate program within 2 years and completion within 5 years
  • Five years of experience as a registered nurse in a related clinical area of practice; AND Two years recent formal or informal management/leadership experience
  • BLS for healthcare provider 
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing leadership
  • Recent formal management experience in patient oriented clinical research, epilepsy monitoring, and/or adult acute care
