Department Overview

This position assists with the coordination and implementation of clinical trials and research projects in the Department of Neurology under the Layton Aging & Alzheimer's Disease Center and ORCATECH, which contribute national and international efforts to understand aging, research promising treatments for Alzheimer's disease, develop technologies for health assessment and patient support, as well as genetics, neuroimaging and pathology.

Function/Duties of Position

The primary focus of this position is the assessment of older adults to provide data for various research projects. These assessments include neurocognitive evaluations, questionnaires, medical history, and functional assessments of daily activities. These assessments can occur in a participant’s home, in –clinics at OHSU, or virtually. Additional duties related to the implementation of research trials include, but are not limited to: assisting with participant recruitment, determining study eligibility for research volunteers, obtaining informed consent, and facilitating study enrollment; participating in regulatory compliance; entering data; collecting and mailing saliva specimens; assisting with training other staff members.

 

Research participants are older adults, so the ability to interact patiently and respectfully with elderly volunteers is essential. This position requires initiative and independent performance of complex and detail-oriented duties while working closely with investigators and other study staff.  Travel in personal vehicle to homes of senior volunteers around Portland Metro area may be required (mileage reimbursed).

 

Exercises good judgment according to existing guidelines (e.g., Good Clinical Practice and HIPAA) to determine appropriate actions within institutional groups (e.g., Institutional Review Board) to recognize adverse events, protocol deviations, and other unanticipated study problems and appropriately reports to senior staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR Associate's AND 2 years of relevant experience OR 3 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Working knowledge of scientific method and human subjects research
  • Fluency in Word, Excel, and other MS Office programs
  • High level of technological proficiency
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-accuracy data collection; organization skills; self-starter; ability to prioritize work demands and manage time appropriately; demonstrated high level of organization and ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to speak and communicate clearly, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism; ability to interact patiently and respectfully with elderly volunteers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in human subjects research
  • REDCap or other database systems
  • Working with seniors
  • Clinical skills including neurocognitive testing

Additional Details

  • Typical schedule: M-F during normal business hours
  • Work location: OHSU Marquam Hill Campus
  • Travel between meeting locations including using the Portland Aerial Tram, and some travel in personal vehicle to homes of senior volunteers around the Portland Metro area (mileage is reimbursed)
  • May have regular exposure to noise and interruptions
  • Ability to carry 25 pounds
