Department Overview

South Operating Room (Main OR) is a large 25-bed OR primarily an adult inpatient operating room with a small volume of outpatient procedures including: Cardiac/ Thoracic, General Surgery/Minimally Invasive/ Colorectal/Bariatric, Gynecology, Oral Maxillofacial, Neuro/neuro spine, Orthopedic/orthopedic spine, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Transplant, Urology, Vascular, Robotic (Urology/GYN/Oral), and Trauma. Surgical procedures on infants and children less than 18 years of age are also performed if the procedure requires specialized equipment found only at this location. The Perioperative Patient Assistant 1, functions as a member of the surgical team, while under the direct supervision and direction of the perioperative registered nurse. The PPA 1 will provide assistance with cleaning and preparing operating rooms, retrieving and cleaning equipment, retrieving and stocking supplies and related items; supports the environment of the unit or service; supports patient care through assistance with prepping and opening supplies before surgery. The Operating Room Equipment Tech/PPA 1 performs general duties in coordinating and assisting OR staff and team leaders in maintaining an up to date inventory of the operating room equipment and equipment accessories; and setting up OR equipment and supplies (case carts) in accordance with established procedures. Works cooperatively through verbal and written communication with staff, physicians, clinical technology services, vendors, and representatives from other departments.

 

Pay Range: $22.50 - $30.45 per hour

Function/Duties of Position

  • Inventories and maintains all equipment, accessories and related supplies; maintains equipment inventory listings of all nonexpendable property; adds new property to inventory, records transfers, and disposition of property; develops record keeping system(s); ensures that the quantity and quality of materials are within established standards; writes and maintains the standards for storage and determines space required for storage; assists in the maintenance and service of equipment inventory and loaner equipment; assists with preventive maintenance and repairs promised by the Clinical Technology Services.

  • Assist and coordinate OR staff and Team Service Coordinators in setting up operating rooms equipment, equipment accessories, and case cart to ensure that all rooms are ready for a surgical procedures; ensures that all equipment is clean, functional and available for use; adheres to established safety standards to ensure protection of patients and employees.

  • Maintains the equipment room and its contents in a clean and organized fashion; ensures that the equipment is housed in the appropriate location at day’s end.

  • Purchases supplies and equipment or authorizes purchases of supplies and equipment up to authorized limit; obtains manager approval on all purchases; updates cost and price information on supplies; accepts bids from vendors on items following OHSU purchasing rules and procedures; meets with vendors regarding procurement and follows up with appropriate staff (Materials Management) when supplies are not delivered; Removes and appropriately discards supplies which are obsolete, spoiled or broken.

  • Scheduled Maintenance and Performance Assurance. Under supervision of Clinical Technology Services, assist in coordinating scheduled cleaning, lubrication, electrical/mechanical adjustment, calibration, performance assurance, safety testing, and replacement of worn or out-of-tolerance parts on patient care and related equipment.

  • In-Service (Teaching or Training). Upon request, conducts technical in-service programs for nurses and medical staff or newly installed equipment, explaining theory of operating, calibration, operator maintenance responsibilities and safety; conducts general electrical and safety programs as required by the DNV and technical theory programs for department staff and interested visitors.

  • Self-Development. Maintains current knowledge in field by attending in-service training and seminars when available, consulting with higher level technicians and professional staff, reading relevant journals or trade publications; learns, keeps current on, applies and encourages others to apply to all relevant unit, OHSU, State, and Federal health and safety standards including from the DNV.

  • Responds to equipment/supply requests in a timely and courteous manner. Assists the Surgical Service Coordinators when there is a need to borrow and/or lend surgical supplies/equipment to and from other perioperative sites as well as other institutions.

  • Assists CSPD Team Leader in the management of general, endoscopic and power management.

  • Responds to equipment malfunction/breakage. Under supervision, troubleshoot, diagnoses, and corrects (within limits of ability and authority) minor malfunctions in related equipment and if necessary contacts Clinical Technology Services for repairs. 

Required Qualifications

  • Equipment Technology, and/or previous Operating Room and/or supply or equipment experienced required. 

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 0 to 3 years experience 

  • Understands and employs standard and specialized testing equipment such as safety, knowledge/experience in working in the operating room and or other hospitals units.

  • Microsoft Word and Excel computer programs required.

  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Biomedical Equipment

  • Technology required with equivalent combination of training and experience in BioMedical

  • Certification by ICC/USCC as a Certified BMET
