Department Overview

The appointee shall provide research services required by the funded projects and as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals.

Conduct scientific research as a member of a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional team. It is expected that the individual will have the ability to perform the procedures without direct supervision and record the progress and outcome of the experiments. Train other investigators in the assays and analyses and monitors their progress. Provide expertise in histopathology, immunology, oncogenomics, cytogenetics, DNA microarray techniques, quantitative digital imaging and interact with computational scientist to evaluate and interpret omic data sets. Independently conduct experiments with cell and tissue samples using molecular, cellular biology and immunologic techniques, including cell-based assays, in vivo mouse preclinical studies, immunohistochemistry, immuno-fluorescence staining, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and evaluate de-identified patient samples (tumors and blood) for immunologic, molecular, and proteomic biomarkers of response to therapy. Apply for independent grant funding to establish an independent research program.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Develop in vivo preclinical models for hypothesis testing based on immune-based regulatory mechanisms.

  • Acquire and analyze microscopy images using dark field, confocal, fluorescence and multi-spectral microscopy.

  • Develop multiplex fluorescence immunohistochemistry and multi-parameter molecular imaging of cells and tissues.

  • Investigate signaling pathways using in vivo and tissue culture cell-based assays and single cell technologies to determine if signaling, and tumorigenic potential, can be modulated by exposure to targeted and/or immunologic anticancer agents.

  • Independently design, perform and interpret experiments to identify and manipulate genes and cellular behavior or function in mouse models of breast cancer.

  • Interact with clinical colleagues to text hypotheses from preclinical studies in clinical trial specimens.

  • Provides training and guidance to other investigators.

  • Mentoring students, postdoctoral scholars within lab.

  • Supervising, managing and training lab technicians within the lab or dedicated to project-specific goals.

  • Write research proposals, or assist in proposal writing, to obtain project funding.

  • Interact with external collaborators (academic and biopharma) to advance immune-oncology projects within the lab.

  • Attend and present technical status reports at group meetings, internal and external seminars, and project updates to external collaborators. Give oral and poster presentations of research findings at scientific conferences. Prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at seminars.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in a related scientific field (tumor immunology preferred) and demonstrates potential for excellence in the relevant area.

  • Minimum 5 years postdoctoral experience in related research area.

  • Proven experience (i.e., first or shared author publications) doing in vivo preclinical studies preferrable in murine models of breast cancer, histopathology, immunology, oncogenomics, and quantitative digital imaging.

  • A background in using mouse models and tissue samples for molecular, cell biology and immunologic techniques, including immunohistochemistry, immuno-fluorescence staining, immunogenomic, and functional assays of cellular activity.

  • Experience with omic datasets and R for analysis and interpretation of results.
